Celebrating Pastors & Partners

More than 70 people attended ACCA's annual Pastors and Partners luncheon Oct. 22, with guest speaker Patricia Harrison, Deputy Fairfax County Executive. Ms. Harrison provided an overview of the key trends affecting human services in the County and answered questions from the audience. The annual luncheon recognizes the pastors of ACCA's 26 member churches and the numerous community partners with whom ACCA works. ACCA thanks Annandale United Methodist for hosting the event, Giant Food Annandale for providing the lunch, Mary Lee Di Spirito who organized the luncheon, and numerous volunteers who served as hosts. Walkers Tackle Hunger

CROP Hunger Walk Chair Camille Mittelholtz (in the CROP Walk tee-shirt) with a group of St. Barnabas parishioners at the annual CROP Walk on Oct. 17 at Lake Accotink Park.

Great fall weather greeted nearly 60 walkers and volunteers who participated in the 2015 CROP Hunger Walk to benefit Church World Service at Lake Accotink Park. Children's' posters highlighting the problem of hunger were on display at the registration area. Fairfax County Supervisors John Cook and Penny Gross welcomed and thanked the walkers for working to combat hunger. Patrick Walker from Church World Service also greeted the walkers. A portion of the funds raised will support ACCA programs.

Scouting for Food - Nov. 14

Scouting for Food, one of the biggest food drives of the year benefitting the ACCA food pantry, will take place on Nov. 14. Local Scouts will distribute plastic bags to homes across the region and ask residents to fill them with non-perishable foods. The Scouts will return to pick up the bags on Nov. 14th and deliver the food to the ACCA Pantry. See a   list of suggested items food pantries need online. Thanks in advance for your generosity!

Opportunity for Service Hours
If you know a student who needs community service hours, opportunities are available at the ACCA Food Pantry. Volunteers are needed to help shelve donations, particularly after the Boy Scout food drive. Hours are flexible. For more information, contact Jean Rackowski at henry.jean@verizon.net.

The Day to Serve food drive in September yielded more than 5,000 lbs. of food and $1,033 in cash donations for the ACCA Food Pantry. ACCA thanks the five supermarkets which participated, including the Annandale Giant, Annandale Safeway, Bradlick Giant, Fairfax Safeway and Landmark Shoppers; numerous volunteers from seven participating ACCA churches; and co-chairs Bart Marcois and Richard Magleby for pulling it all together. We are blessed by your hard work!
Update on ACCA Ministries
Here's a snapshot of how ACCA served our community in September:
  • The Pantry made 71 deliveries of food and hygiene items assisting 205 people.
  • The Furniture program made 31 pickups and delivered furniture to 28 households; among them was a Vietnam-era veteran who moved into a sponsored but empty apartment.
  • Transportation served six clients with rides to medical appointments
  • Meals on Wheels served 28 clients with two meals per day.
  • Family Emergency provided rental assistance to 24 households, paid utilities for 13 households, and provided other cash assistance to three households.

On behalf of all who were served, thank you ACCA volunteers.

Goodwin House Benefactors
Seven generous residents of Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads (GHBC) recently contributed a total of $1,695 to ACCA, qualifying for a
dollar-for-dollar matching gift from the Goodwin House Foundation. GHBC also contributes food and furniture to ACCA. We thank them for all their support for needy families in our community.
In Memoriam
With great sadness, ACCA notes the passing of Robin Holmes, wife of long-time ACCA volunteer Fred Holmes and mother-in-law to Kathy Holmes, a member of the Child Development Center Board. A service of remembrance was held on Oct. 23 at St. Alban's Episcopal.  Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family via ACCA, 7200 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003.
Upcoming Events
Parents of teens are invited to a presentation on communicating with teens on Sunday, Nov. 8 from 3 - 5 p.m. at Ravensworth Baptist. This is a free seminar, open to the whole community, and not a faith-based presentation. More information and registration are available online.
