Department of Public and Behavioral Health continues to offer the
Baby Steps to Breastfeeding Success Hospital training

The Baby Friendly Hospital Designation which incorporates the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding represents the universal gold standard in the provision of lactation support after delivery.  To date, three of our state's 18 birthing hospitals have achieved the Baby Friendly designation. Nevada has a high percentage of mothers who initiate breastfeeding, but many mothers discontinue breastfeeding in the first few days. Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data (PRAMS) in Colorado was used to examine the effects of hospital practices on breastfeeding duration and whether the effects differed by income level. The study showed breastfeeding duration was improved for mothers at all income levels with the use of five specific hospital practices. The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH) has been offering trainings to Nevada hospitals centered on the application of the five "Baby Friendly" practices found to increase breastfeeding duration for mothers.  To date, six Nevada hospitals have received the training, totaling nearly 600 nurses.

While remaining Nevada birthing hospitals may strive to achieve all 10 steps in the future, working toward five practices will go a long way toward making a real difference in the health of infants and mothers.  To view Baby Steps to Breastfeeding Success resource tools, click here and here.  To request a training at your hospital, email [email protected]

Southern Nevada Children First (SNCF) has recently launched two new programs, Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and Families Talking Together (FTT). PCIT is  a specialized evidence based therapeutic modality to youth (2-7yrs of age) with behavior problems including aggressiveness, not following directions, temper tantrums, ADHD, and other conduct problems that present issues within their home, school, or childcare settings. This treatment modality teaches parents how to decrease the child's problematic behaviors and increase the positive desired behaviors.

SNCF will be introducing Families Talking Together, an evidence based curriculum that targets parents of youth between the ages of 10-14yrs of age.  FTT teaches parents how to effectively start conversations related to sex with their youth.  The goal of FTT is to delay the onset of youth becoming sexually active and creating a relationship where the youth feels comfortable discussing the topic with their parents instead of only with their peers. Click here for website.

TheCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed the Learn the Signs Act Early initiative with the goal to educate parents to track their child's development and act early if there is a concern. As part of this initiative, the CDC developed a Milestone Moments Booklet that includes milestones for social/emotional, language/communication, cognitive, and physical development skills for children ages birth to 5-years.  Nevada has developed its own Learn the Signs Act Early state team (NvLTSAE); and one of the projects has been to adapt the CDC's Milestone Moments Booklet specific to Nevada that include   s contact information of agencies where parents can go to get help for their children if they do suspect a concern. However, NvLTSAE has put its own stamp on this booklet, which includes milestones to age 6. With several partners including the Nevada Maternal and Child Health Program, Children's Cabinet, Nevada Department of Education, Nevada LEND, Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities (NCED), and Grant-a-Gift Foundation, we have been able to print 100,000 booklets to distribute to parents across the state. The booklets will go into all newborn packets.
Booklets are available for free at various locations throughout Nevada. You can contact Kate Hill at the NCED and she can put you contact with one of the distribution locations. Kate Hill:  775-682-9052;  [email protected] .  Booklets will be available October 12th.

Nevada 2-1-1 Strategic Plan  2016-2020

Nevada 2-1-1 has undergone many changes over the past two years. In 2015, operations of the 2-1-1 call center(s) shifted from two long-standing providers to a new provider, the Financial Guidance Center. In addition, a collaboration between the DHHS and the Nevada Division of Health Care Financing and Policy (DHCFP) allowed the State to invest in 2-1-1's long-term infrastructure.
Click here for the executive summary of the strategic plan.  The complete document can be found at here.
