Love Made Visible by Skilled Hands
Rebuilding 2016

The 2016 ACCA/Rebuilding Together Home Repair project demonstrated love made visible in the hands-on, paint-spattered and mud-stained efforts of some 70 volunteers. Together, they repaired and rehabilitated a group home for adults with special needs and the home of a 71-year-old widow.

Volunteers painted the entire interior of the group home, repaired and rebuilt the front steps and railings and did extensive work cleaning gutters and improving the drainage around the house. In addition, they made many minor repairs and did yard work, clearing brush and removing a lot of pesky poison ivy. Participants from Holy Spirit Catholic, John Calvin Presbyterian (JCPC), Providence Presbyterian and Ravensworth Baptist (RBC) churches were led by Brad Moffett (RBC) and Jim Stewart (JCPC). Queen of Apostles provided lunch.

At the second home, volunteers painted a timber wall, repaired and painted two decks, and installed two new railings. They also repaired the shed roof and doors, painted window trim, installed screens, and cleaned up the yard. Inside they installed a kitchen faucet, ground fault circuits, bathroom grab bars and a shower curtain and made a number of minor repairs. Participants from Annandale United Methodist Church (AUMC), the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Annandale Stake and St. Barnabas Episcopal (St.B), were led by Ken and Camille Mittelholtz and Frank Spink (St.B) and John Clarke (AUMC). Lincolnia Methodist Church provided lunch.

Thank you to Marie Monsen, ACCA Housing Repair Chair, and all who volunteered, provided food, and supported our work through their donations. The hugs and tears of joy from this year's recipients matched the warm glow the volunteers felt at the end of the day. See photos on the ACCA Facebook page and an article in the Annandale Blog

Help Us Do More on June 2
do more 2016 Mark your calendar: on Thursday, June 2, ACCA will participate in  Do More 24 , a 24-hour online fundraiser hosted by United Way of the National Capital Area.

From groups focusing on animal welfare, to the arts and environment, to health and human services, more than 600 local charities will be participating.  Do More 24 is a way for all of us to invest in the organizations that help our communities thrive.

ACCA's goal is to raise support for our on-going ministries: providing emergency food and financial assistance, furniture, and quality child care for children from low income families at the ACCA Child Development Center.

Small donations, beginning at $24, are welcome. You can also donate directly to ACCA by check. Simply write Do More 24 on the memo line and send it to ACCA 7200 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 20003.
Update on ACCA Ministries
Family Emergency Assistance served 26 households in April, providing $14,450 in assistance for rent, utilities, and medical care. Due to an improving economy and milder weather, demand for emergency assistance is down somewhat from last year.

The Food Pantry made 49 deliveries in April, serving 130 people. The Pantry also made Easter deliveries to 29 families. Some families received Girl Scout cookies, thanks to a local troop that donated unsold cookies.

The Furniture Ministry had a busy month with 68 furniture pickups and deliveries. An emergency delivery was made to a family associated with Corpus Christi School that lost everything in an apartment fire. We were able to provide beds and blankets, a table and six chairs, dressers, coffee tables and lamps.

The Furniture ministry was blessed by a donation of dressers from the Best Western Hotel in Falls Church, and additional dressers from George Washington University.

Needed now: dining chairs and small dining tables, small televisions, and microwave ovens. Please call (703) 256-9513 if you have items to donate.

The Transportation Ministry provided four rides to four clients in its final month as a stand alone program. We thank all the parish transportation coordinators for their service over the years and encourage drivers to sign up for the new ACCA/Shepherd's Center of Annandale Springfield Transportation Program, which began May 1. Read more about the joint program at the link above or contact Gail Coleman at gv.coleman@verizon.net.

The Annandale Meals on Wheels program delivered a total of 914 meals to 25 clients in April. If you are interested in becoming a Meals on Wheels driver, contact Cheri White at cwhite8333@gmail.com.
Local Support for Stamp Out Hunger
stamp out hunger The National Association of Letter Carriers' annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive on May 14 was a big success, yielding at least four full truckloads of food for the ACCA Food Pantry. We are very grateful to the local postal workers who picked up the food donations, the many residents who donated and to the wonderful volunteers who volunteered their time. We had many helping hands to load the trucks at the Post Office in Annandale as well as to unload them at the Pantry and to shelve the food. To all, we say, "Great job!"

ACCA to Celebrate 50 Years of Service
ACCA will kick off a celebration of its 50 years of serving people in need in the Annandale/Baileys Crossroads community in November 2016. A yearlong celebration of ACCA's founding in 1967 is planned and ACCA invites every congregation to participate.

If you have memories to share or want to get involved, please contact one of the event co-chairs, Diane McEldowney Didmc_19@msn.com or Ann Marie Hicks amhicks@aol.com. A planning meeting will take place at John Calvin Presbyterian Church on June 1 at 10 a.m.

Money Captains Needed
Family Emergency Assistance seeks a few good people to serve as money captains. Money captains receive email requests for financial assistance on behalf of low-income individuals or families from Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning (CSP) specialists. Using written guidelines, they distribute ACCA funds for rent, utilities, and other needs.

Money captains typically serve for 1 or 2 weeks per quarter. They need to be available during regular business hours to receive email correspondence and possible phone calls, and have basic computer and Internet skills. Approximately 10 requests are received each week and each request takes about 10 - 15 minutes to process. If you are interested in serving as an ACCA Money Captain, please contact Marie Markey at mmarkey27@verizon.net.

Put Your Handyman Skills to Use
Rebuilding Together Arlington/Fairfax/Falls Church needs volunteers with good handyman and remodeling skills (grab bars, handrails, smoke detectors, dryer vents, etc.) to help low-income seniors age safely in place. Volunteers work in small teams on half-day projects every 4-6 weeks.

On June 4, there will be  a Hands-On Training in Critical Home Repairs focusing on the "nuts and bolts" of how to make repairs using the right methods and materials. Veteran volunteers (including ACCA house captain Ken Mittelholtz) will be leading seven different hands-on work stations.  Both remodeling veterans and novices, will benefit from this training.  Those who are interested can register online or call   703-528-1999  or email  info@rebuildingtogether-aff.org .

Second Annual Super Sprint Triathlon
2016 Triathalong On Saturday August 27, local sponsors will hold a family friendly triathlon to benefit disadvantaged youth, including the ACCA Child Development Center and the Kisima Child Care Academy and Orphanage in Naitiri, Kenya. Friends of Kisima began as a project of John Calvin Presbyterian, which is inviting other congregations to get involved. Contact Bonnie Lefbom at triforthekidsLPRC@gmail.com for additional information.
