Volunteers To Tackle Home Repairs
2015 Rebuilding
Volunteers at last year's ACCA Rebuilding Together Event
On Saturday, April 30, ACCA volunteers will participate in Rebuilding Together, the largest volunteer home repair program in the USA. Under the leadership of house captains Brad Moffett, Jim Stewart, Ken Mittleholtz, and Frank Spink they will tackle various repairs for a windowed homeowner and at a group home. Marie Monsen, ACCA Chair for Housing Repair, said, "This is a very special ministry and many volunteers return year after year."  Contact mamonsen@verizon.net if you would like to help out.
Transportation Program Revamped
Beginning May 1, the ACCA Transportation Ministry, which offers rides to medical appointments using volunteer drivers, will join with the transportation program offered by the Shepherd's Center of Annandale Springfield (SCAS). The combined Shepherd's Center of Annandale Springfield/Annandale Christian Community for Action Transportation Program will offer rides to medical facilities. SCAS also provides rides to grocery stores, food banks, and banking facilities to clients over age 50 on weekends. ACCA will continue to offer volunteer drivers for clients under age 50 who are referred to ACCA for medical appointments.

"Combining our operations lets ACCA take advantage of the Shepherd's Center's efficient and user-friendly software for ride scheduling," said Gail Coleman. Ms. Coleman chairs the ACCA Transportation Committee, which coordinates with the SCAS in administering the combined program.

"We are extremely grateful to Madeline Crytzer of St. Michael's Catholic Church, former Chair of the Transportation Committee, and Ray Hanlein of St. Alban's Episcopal Church, scheduling assistant, who have managed the ACCA Transportation Program for many years. In addition, we couldn't have run the program without the participating churches and our volunteer drivers," Ms. Coleman said.

CDC to Host Family Day
The ACCA Child Development Center (CDC) will host Family Day on Sunday, May 1, from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. It will include performances by Wolftrap musicians, dancers, free books, food, tours of the CDC, and the opportunity to enroll. Please spread the word to families looking for affordable, high-quality early education and developmentally appropriate care for children ages 3 months to 5 years in a safe, healthy and diverse environment. All are welcome.
Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive
We invite postal customers in the Annandale area to participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers. On Saturday, May 14, just set out your non-perishable food donation well before your letter carrier's normal pick-up time. Note that he or she will be delivering and collecting mail as usual, on top of collecting food donations, so that pickup time could be slightly later than usual.

Food donations in the Annandale area are given to the ACCA Food Pantry, so we will need volunteers to help transport the food from the Post Office on John Marr Drive to the pantry. If you can help, please meet at the Food Pantry between 5 and 5:15 pm on May 14. Volunteers will go to the post office and bring the food donations back to the Pantry.
Update on ACCA Ministries
During March, Family Emergency Assistance served 54 households, providing assistance with rent and utility payments. This included 11 additional households served with funding from a United Way grant.

Meals on Wheels served 23 clients. Volunteer drivers are needed for both the Annandale and the Baileys Crossroads Meals on Wheels programs. There is no minimum time commitment, and you only drive on the days you are available. For more information on the Annandale program, contact Cheri White at cwhite8333@gmail.com. For Bailey's Crossroads, contact Mary Lee Di Spirito at ddmld@verizon.net.

The ACCA Furniture Ministry made 21 deliveries and 27 pickups in March. They were able to furnish three previously empty apartments, including one for a refugee family of five, one for a family with a handicapped child, and one for a disabled veteran who had only a single bed mattress. See what a difference your gently used furniture can make! If you have items you no longer need, please call 703-256-9513 to arrange a pickup. See the furniture donation guidelines on the ACCA website.

Also in March, the Furniture Ministry received 38 dressers from the George Washington University campus in Ashburn. ACCA is very grateful for our continued partnership with GW University.

The Food Pantry made 66 deliveries serving 167 people. Thanks to the
Annandale United Football Club Pride soccer program, which collected 657 pounds of food and $80 in cash for the Pantry during their 4th annual Kicks for Cans charity event.

Items currently in short supply at the Pantry include cereal, canned fruit, tomato paste, juices and personal toiletry items.
Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon
The Shepherd's Center of Annandale Springfield (ACCA's new Transportation Program partner) in is hosting a Polynesian Party to honor its volunteers. All are welcome. The luncheon will be held Thursday, May 26 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:15 pm, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 5800 Backlick Rd., Springfield, VA 22150. Polynesian dancers will perform.
