I would like to convey in my communication the excitement and optimism I am hearing regarding the future of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)! In May 2014, the ACPE Board of Representatives commissioned the Organizational Design Work Group (ODWG) to address governance and structural questions facing the association. Rising competition from other organizations offering versions of CPE, and legal and governance concerns about financial management and accountability were some of the challenges and opportunities to be addressed in a new structure. The proposed bylaw changes and governance structure are guided by membership input and desired outcomes. The voice of the body has been heard, and it will continue to be heard. The membership will make the final decision!

Department of Labor |
We continue to receive questions about the implications of the changes to the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA), especially as it relates to financial compensation for residents. Susan Campbell, a national labor/human resources attorney with Bryan Cave, has provided a memo with specific recommendations. We recommend you share this memo with your human resources department as you make final decisions related to the FLSA rules. There are at least two pieces of legislation currently before the US Congress that could impact the implementation of the FLSA rules. We will keep you posted should we receive word of any further changes. In the meantime, you can access the new memo here.

Chaplain Research Fellows
|
(Chicago) The Training Research-Literate Chaplains as Ambassadors for Spirituality and Health program announced the selection of its first cohort of chaplain research fellows and of the first recipients of the program's clinical pastoral education curriculum development grants. The fellowships and grants are part of Training Research-Literate Chaplains' efforts to advance knowledge about religion and health in health care organizations and among the public.

Transforming Chaplaincy |
The Transforming Chaplaincy: Promoting Research Literacy for Improved Patient Outcomes project will open applications for the second round of awards by October 15th. The project, funded by the John Templeton Foundation, with support from the APC, NACC, NAJC and ACPE, aims to equip healthcare chaplains to use research to guide, evaluate, and advocate for the daily spiritual care they provide patients, family members and colleagues.

Zornitsa Darakeva-Krasteva (Zizi) joins ACPE as the Accounting Assistant. Zornitsa graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor's degree in accounting. She also has a Master's degree in linguistics and translation from Veliko Tarnovo University, Bulgaria.
Zornitsa is a native of Bulgaria but has lived with her family in Atlanta for twelve years. Before joining ACPE, Zizi worked as an administrative assistant and a bank teller. In her free time Zizi enjoys spending time with her family, riding a bike and visiting new places.

My professional career has been built around speaking into a microphone. As a radio news reporter, anchor and host for more than three decades - I've delivered tens-of-thousands of newscasts on the air. My voice, coming through a radio speaker, has informed people about threatening weather, economic ups and downs, and the quirky happenings of life. Over the years, I've also had the opportunity to interview hundreds of people - politicians, activists, artists, disaster victims, and more. My "radio voice," slipping in and out of people's daily existence, has momentarily enlightened, calmed, angered, or inspired. Lately, I've been discovering and developing an additional voice - the voice of a hospital chaplain.

Professional Ethics Commission Action
|
The ACPE Professional Ethics Commission found Rev. Daryl M. Hanson in violation of ACPE Standard 105.1. Per Rev. Hanson's 2015 Probation Agreement, the Board of Representatives withdrew Rev. Hanson's membership in ACPE.
