HELP US MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!
Marshfield Area United Way is recruiting volunteers to participate in National Make a Difference Day, Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. On this morning, participants will be raking leaves for elderly and disabled Marshfield residents in need of assistance with their yards.

Make A Difference Day is a great event to help out your community with friends, family, classmates, church groups and/or co-workers. A little bit of time, a little bit of muscle and a lot of heart will make a big difference for Marshfield residents who are physically unable to rake their lawns themselves. Volunteers interested in helping on this day can register at volunteermarshfield.org, by sending an email to [email protected], or by calling 715-384-9992.

Residents in need of assistance with their lawns should call United Way to see if they qualify for assistance.

HAVE YOU MET ALICE?

ALICE is an acronym which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. ALICE is a way of defining and understanding families and individuals (men and women) who work hard, earn above the federal poverty level, but not enough to achieve basic financial stability; leaving them vulnerable to one unexpected life emergency to spiral them into poverty. The United Way ALICE project is a grass roots movement committed to improving the lives of ALICE households and strengthening our communities.

Recently, United Way of Wisconsin released a statewide report identifying this population of individuals throughout the state. The data is available at a county level, as well.

Please join us for a presentation about ALICE in the State of Wisconsin and Wood County:

MAKING AN IMPACT...

The annual backpack and school supply drive always leaves a smile on your face and a tear in your eye. It was a hot summer afternoon in August when a young (teenage) girl entered the school to pick up backpacks and school supplies for herself and her two siblings. Her cheeks bright red, her face fatigued. She had just practiced volleyball for the past two hours at the high school and then hopped on her bike and rode to the opposite side of town to get needed school supplies for herself and siblings.

She had entered with a backpack and water bottle and there wasn't any way she was possibly going to be able to bike to her next destination with four backpacks. She called a family member to help her get home. While on the phone asking for a ride she began to cry. Her family member must have asked her why she was crying and she replied, "Because you're yelling at me." It was heartbreaking to think that at that moment, after she had taken on the responsibility of making sure she and her siblings would have what they needed to begin the school year...that when she needed someone, she still didn't feel supported.

Her ride did eventually come to pick her up that afternoon. But it's troublesome to know that so many children, like this young girl, take on the responsibilities of an adult to give themselves an equal opportunity to be successful in school...and life. When you give to United Way you are helping ensure all children, no matter their circumstances, are prepared to learn in the coming year.

Last year, your gift to United Way impacted 1015 students through programs, like the backpack and school supply drive, that focus on school success in the Marshfield area. Your generosity is making an impact in our community.
