AUTHOR EVENT: CANDICE MILLARD
HERO OF THE EMPIRE: THE BOER WAR, A DARING ESCAPE, AND THE MAKING OF WINSTON CHURCHILL

If you are in the area, stop by the St Louis County Library Thursday, September 29 at 7:00 PM for Candice Millard's book event.

Chosen as the 2016 Read St Louis History Selection, Millard will speak about her latest book, Hero of the Empire: The Boer War, a Daring Escape, and the Making of Winston Churchill. Millard is a former National Geographic Magazine writer and editor. She lives with her family in Kansas City.

About the book: At age twenty-four, Churchill was convinced it was his destiny to become prime minister of England one day, despite the fact he had just lost his first election campaign for Parliament. He believed that to achieve his goal he must do something spectacular on the battlefield. Two weeks after his arrival to South Africa in 1899, Churchill's group was ambushed and he was taken prisoner. He pulled of a daring escape, but then had to travel hundreds of miles through enemy territory alone. Millard's account is an epic story of bravery and chance encounters.
