Tracking Hurricane Matthew
Fort Lauderdale's Emergency Management Bureau continues to closely monitor Hurricane Matthew and we encourage our neighbors to do the same. Hurricane Matthew is currently a Category 4 storm. It is making its way through the Caribbean and is expected to continue moving north throughout the week bringing with it strong winds, heavy rain, and dangerous storm surge.
According to the National Weather Service, the time period for potential impact to our area will be from Wednesday onward. While, at this point, it does not look like Fort Lauderdale will be in the direct path of the storm, it is very likely that we will begin seeing effects from Hurricane Matthew as it passes offshore midweek. As such, it is more important than ever that all of our neighbors remain vigilant and ensure they are well-prepared if and when we experience severe weather conditions.

A Penny at Work
Learn about the proposed half-penny sales surtax on the November 8 ballot
There will be two half penny sales tax questions on the November 8th ballot. One is for funding countywide transportation projects and the other is to fund infrastructure projects in Broward cities, including Fort Lauderdale. Together, the two proposals represent a one percent sales surtax, which is the equivalent of one penny per dollar spent. For example, if you go to a restaurant and spend $10 on a meal, you will spend an additional 10 cents in sales tax if the proposals pass.
The proposed half penny sales surtax for infrastructure would be used to help Fort Lauderdale fund a variety of projects, including a public safety facility; bike, transit, and neighborhood mobility projects; the repair and replacement of roads, bridges, seawalls, and sidewalks; stormwater and drainage projects; pedestrian safety projects; and recreation and conservation projects. The two ballot questions are linked together, so both must pass or both will fail.

City of Fort Lauderdale to Chlorinate Water System
Twice Annual Preventive Maintenance Scheduled for October 18 - November 22, 2016
Fort Lauderdale - The City of Fort Lauderdale will temporarily return to using free chlorine in its drinking water system. This preventive maintenance procedure will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2016 and will end at 9 a.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2016.
Free chlorination is a common practice for water systems using combined chlorine disinfection. The chlorination period is anticipated to be transparent to water customers; however, some may notice a slight change in the taste or smell of their tap water.
Some customers may also see water running from fire hydrants in their neighborhoods, which is part of the normal maintenance process.
This procedure will affect the City of Fort Lauderdale, as well as Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Port Everglades, Village of Sea Ranch Lakes, Wilton Manors, and sections of the Town of Davie, Oakland Park, and Tamarac (east of State Road 7/441).
The City of Fort Lauderdale maintains the highest standards to ensure clean, high quality drinking water is delivered to its customers. The City's drinking water meets all federal, state, and local drinking water quality standards.

"Jack" Seiler will host the annual State of the City Address and Advisory Board Reception in conjunction with a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the A1A reconstruction project. The event will take place on Thursday, October 27 at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, located at 3109 East Sunrise Boulevard. King Tides Expected October 14 - 21
Flooding in low-lying areas is more likely in the fall months, as the close proximity of the moon, high tides, rising sea levels, and inclement weather conditions combine to exacerbate flooding risks.
As a coastal community with numerous low-lying areas and 300 miles of canal coastline, Fort Lauderdale neighbors are advised to be especially vigilant from now through December, when tides are expected to be at their highest levels for the year.
While the City maintains an extensive stormwater master plan and is instituting both aggressive maintenance and innovative adaptation solutions to address drainage, including the installation of tidal valves, the location and natural geography of the City makes neighborhoods susceptible to flooding. Remember that flooded streets may be covered in either fresh or saltwater. Please take caution whenever driving on flooded streets. When in doubt, turn around.
