Mental Illness Awareness Week October 2-8

During the first full week of October, NAMI and participants across the country are raising awareness of mental illness. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care. Each year, the movement grows stronger.

To help spread the word, NAMI's #MIAW pages provide a variety of resources to download, such as flyers, posters and social media graphics. NAMI's resource toolkit contains press releases and other templates to customize within your communities. We believe that mental health issues are important to address year-round, but highlighting them during #MIAW provides a time for people to come together and display the passion and strength of those working to improve the lives of the tens of millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

NAMI California would like to highlight affiliate activities and share with members all the great work that is being done across the state. If you are planning an event for Mental Illness Awareness Week please share by sending information to [email protected].

Program News

Just a reminder to affiliates who offer the Ending the Silence program, NAMI California now offers new presenters training through an online training format developed by NAMI. This program allows presenters the ability for on-demand training to meet the needs of those with busy schedules. This online program will record when a presenter completes the training and is ready for the next phase of training.

Please review the Online Presenter Training Process for California form for details on the process of the online training (link below). If you have questions, please contact Erik Villalobos, Education Coordinator, at [email protected] .

For affiliates that do not already offer the program, NAMI California will be hosting in-person ETS training in September, please see above. Please stay tuned for more information as details become available!

Provider Education 4-Hour Education Seminar Now Available

NAMI Provider Education is a free 5-week course that presents a penetrating, subjective view of family and consumer experiences with serious mental illness to line staff at public agencies who work directly with people experiencing severe and persistent mental illnesses. The course helps providers realize the challenges that families and consumers face and appreciate the courage and persistence it takes to live with and recover from mental illness.

NAMI is excited to announce that it is now offering the Provider Education course in a 4-hour seminar format instead of the 5-week course, which is based on the NAMI Provider curriculum. The 5-week course is still a valid option, but you now have access to another format. The seminar is presented using Power Point slides, lecture, handouts and interactive exercises. The seminar is taught by a teaching team that includes one family member, one person in recovery and one mental health professional, who is also affected by mental illness. This wonderful opportunity will help affiliates deliver this program to mental health providers.

The NAMI Provider seminar must be presented by participants that have successfully completed the teacher training for the full program (1.5 days). Additional webinar training is required of all NAMI Provider teachers who wish to offer the seminar.

For any questions, please contact Erik Villalobos, Education Coordinator at [email protected] . For more information about the new seminar, you can review the following documents:

Reporting NAMI Education Program Data

Reporting the data collected from classes, support groups and trainings to the NAMI Data Collection Site is extremely important. Reporting helps NAMI California provide more data to obtain funding so that we can provide trainings for NAMI's Signature Programs. We understand that navigating the reporting site can be challenging, but we are here to help if any assistance is needed with navigating the Data Collection Site. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact NAMI California at (916) 567-0163.

2017 Directing Change Program & Film Contest

The Directing Change Program & Film Contest is part of Each Mind Matters: California's Mental Health Movement. The program offers young people the exciting opportunity to participate in the movement by creating 60-second films about suicide prevention and mental health that are used to support awareness, education and advocacy efforts on these topics. Learning objectives surrounding mental health and suicide prevention are integrated into the submission categories of the film contest, giving young people the opportunity to critically explore these topics. Program participants - whether they are making a film, acting as an adult advisor, or judging the films - are exposed to appropriate messaging about these topics, warning signs, how to appropriately respond to someone in distress, where to seek help, as well as how to stand up for others who are experiencing a mental health challenge.  In addition, schools and organizations are offered free prevention programs and educational resources. Click here to download Directing Change Talking Points.

Directing Change is part of Each Mind Matters:  California's Mental Health Movement and statewide efforts to prevent suicide, reduce stigma and discrimination related to mental illness, and to promote the mental health and wellness of students. These initiatives are funded by counties through the voter-approved Mental Health Services Act (Prop 63) and administered by the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA). CalMHSA is an organization of county governments working to improve mental health outcomes for individuals, families and communities, and administers programs on a statewide, regional, and local basis. For more information on CalMHSA visit: www.calmhsa.org

Directing Change is part of Each Mind Matters, California's Mental Health Movement.  Each Mind Matters serves as the megaphone to amplify the voices of all people who want to put an end to stigma related to mental health and create a community where everyone feels comfortable reaching out for the support they deserve.  For more information visit:  eachmindmatters.org .
