Advocacy Updates

As our Members of Congress head into their pre-election recess, in-district meetings will be put off until after the November elections. We will have at least three new representatives due to the retirement of Steve Israel, Charles Rangel, and Chris Gibson.

When bills related to the Sustainable Development Goals are proposed in the next session of Congress, we will inform our representatives about UNA-USA's positions. One issue, criminal justice reform, that is related to SDG 16, Peace and Justice, seems to have bipartisan support. Currently, Senator Cory Booker is urging Senator Mitch McConnell to have the Senate vote on the Redeem Act, a bill that proposes a number of reforms including sealing the criminal records of nonviolent offenders who have served their prison terms.

Discussions at the Southern NY Division's event, "Race, Criminal Justice and Human Rights," will produce a package of reforms that will be presented to Governor Andrew Cuomo for incorporation into proposed NY State legislation. In 2017, we will be visiting our State Senators and Members of the Assembly to urge passage of those bills.

We expect that many UNA-USA members will want to join groups that visit both their national and state legislators to advocate for our issues.
