NE-LMSC Coach Scholarship Selections

Thank you to everyone who applied for a NE-LMSC scholarship to attend the 2016 USMS National Coaches Clinic in San Mateo, California.  On behalf of the selection committee, congratulations to these three recipients:

Open Water Update

Fall and winter are great times for recreational and competitive open water swimmers to build toward next year's outdoor season, and indoor pool techniques like shifting gears and speedplay will help you gain speed for next summer. Preparing for and participating in the  USMS ePostal National Championship series is one productive and convenient way to stay in shape while competing with thousands of other ePostal participants nationwide, right from your home pool! There is still plenty of time to complete the  3,000 and 6,000-yard ePostal swims by the November 15th deadline, and just after the holidays is the hugely popular mid-winter One Hour ePostal Swim, which attracts nearly 3,000 participants each year.

Fernald Completes Triple Crown

Congratulations Bob Fernald of Great Bay Masters, who swam the 21-mile Catalina Channel Swim - between Catalina Island and the Southern California mainlan d - on August 25 to complete the daunting Triple Crown of open water swimming.  The Triple Crown includes the English Channel (completed July 2014), the swim around Manhattan Island (completed June 2015), and the Catalina Channel. Fernald joins a
very select group of 139 daring marathon swimmers worldwide who have completed this feat. Other New Englanders who have completed this triple include Elaine Howley and Ned Denison.  The Catalina swim  starts in the middle of the night to take advantage of the calmer sea and is largely in complete  darkness through ocean water that has significant temperature drops, unpredictable currents, and is known to be inhabited by sharks!

Davis Shines at Inaugural Swim Serpentine

Guy Davis of Gre at Bay Masters competed in the first edition of Swim Serpentine last month. By winning the first of thirteen waves in a time of 21:13, Davis, 57,  became the first person ever to complete the one-mile course. Over f our thousand swimmers participated in the event,  which took place in London at the 2012 Olympic Open Water and Triathlon venue .  The next day Davis showed his resiliency by winning his age group in the 3.3K British Open Water Championships in a time of 43:41.

NE Athletes Excel at ITU World Triathlon Grand Final

Two NE-LMSC members had top finishes at the ITU World Triathlo n Grand Final in Cozumel, Mexico this September. Michael McCombs of Worcester Area Masters and Stacy Sweetser of Sweetwater Swim Studio both pulled off impressive doubles, competing in the Olympic distance race just 3 days after racing the Sprint. McCombs placed 5th in the world in his age group in the Sprint (1:09:29), then followed that up with a World Championship performance in the Olympic distance (2:19:22). Sweetser placed third in her a ge group in the Sprint (1:11:25) and eighth in the Olympic distance race (2:20:48).


Jenny Thompson Summer Meet Photos and Results

Great Bay Masters hosted another successful summer LCM meet on July 17 at Dover's Jenny Thompson pool. The meet is popular with swimmers looking to achieve LCM Top 10 times and to prepare for LCM Nationals. Sixty four swimmers from seven clubs participated.
