How Anxiety Affects School Performance
Anxiety in the Classroom
"Telling someone with anxiety to just calm down is like telling someone with epilepsy to just stop having a seizure." - Unknown

It's been several weeks since classes have started back up and that means testing has also resumed. For many children, just the very thought of taking a test can cause a "fight-or-flight" response which, if left untreated, can become a serious barrier to a child's education and mental health.

According to a 2015 report by the Child Mind Institute, "Anxiety and depression are treatable, but 80 percent of kids with a diagnosable anxiety disorder and 60 percent of kids with diagnosable depression are not getting treatment."

When a student acts out - throws a book, yells, storms out of the room - or has difficulty learning to read or grasping new math concepts, teachers often don't suspect anxiety as the underlying cause, which means the problems may persist or worsen.

If you or your child's school makes the determination that an academic assessment is in order, contact Wellspring today and we can help.
