OSCC Review of Upcoming Ballot Measures
Fall 2016

There is a lot on the table in these upcoming elections and your local chamber is working alongside of the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce (OSCC) to advocate on your behalf. We realize that business owners don't always have the time to dedicate to actively engage political measures which will affect them because they are busy running their business. That's where we bridge the gap. Here is their overview of where we stand... Right beside you!

Defeat Measure 97
The Stayton Sublimity Chamber Joins Coalition
The Stayton Sublimity Chamber Board of Directors has voted to oppose Measure 97, the $6 billion tax on sales that will appear on Oregon ballots mailed to voters next month.

Kelly's New Picture Kelly Schreiber, President/CEO of the Chamber, said members are concerned about Measure 97's damaging effects on Oregon's economy, and that it will act like a hidden sales tax boosting prices on products and services Oregon consumers and businesses depend on every day - groceries, utilities, medicine, phone and internet services, insurance and even medical care.

"The nonpartisan Legislative Review Office (LRO) released a report in May demonstrating that Measure 97 will result in a loss of over 38,000 private sector jobs," said Kelly Schreiber. "Many businesses operate on low profit margins, and they will have no choice but to raise prices, cut staff or both."

LRO economists estimated that most of the cost of Measure 97 would be passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices. "Oregon's small businesses and consumers will be hit hard by those higher costs", warned Schreiber.

7 Key Reasons to
Vote NO on Measure 97

1) Measure 97 is a tax on total sales - not profits - that would increase consumer costs for all types of products and services.

2)  Measure 97 would be the biggest tax increase in Oregon history - $6 billion.

3)  Measure 97 is a deceptive, hidden sales tax.

4) Measure 97 would especially hurt Oregon families, farmers and small businesses who can least afford higher costs.

5) Measure 97's badly-designed tax on sales would result in taxes on top of taxes.

6) Measure 97 would damage Oregon's economy and cause the loss of thousands of local jobs.

7) There's no guarantee the money would go to education or anything else. The Legislature could spend it "any way it chooses."

Food for Thought:

"The Legislative Revenue Office noted, among other things, that the tax would slow the growth in private-sector employment and behave much like a sales tax, reducing annual income by hundreds of dollars even for people making less than $21,000 per year."
