Saturday Bird Walk − Bird Count − June 18, 2016
Sunny and warm. 80°F. 2-12 mph. 14 participants.

The predicted hot weather drove us to the hills this morning. We started with a cool breeze, but

after that subsided, we began to bake. Betasso was very active (in terms of individuals). The flowers are really coming on in the foothills and mountains.

Bird of the Day
Red Crossbill −
Loxia curvirostra

It was real toss-up between western bluebird and red crossbill for the Bird of the Day Honors.

That strange crossed bill has a certain attraction for me so it won. Their crazy crossed bill, which you can see quite clearly in many of the slide show images, is used to give the birds enough leverage to pry apart pine cone scales exposing the pine nut they are guarding. Then the crossbill uses its spoon-shaped tongue to scoop up the nut.
