HOSPICE HAPPENINGS - September 2016

   In This Issue:
Spirit of Alohaaloha

Earlier this month, volunteer Jane Tulloch (pictured right) and dancing partner Brenda Christian brought a taste of Hawaii to Pilgrims Hospice. "We like to share our hula dances or performances with others because it allows us the opportunity to convey love and joy through dance - all in the Spirit of Aloha."

The Spirit of Aloha, according to Jane, is a way of life, a warmth in caring with no obligation in return. "It's a reminder to consider the other person and try to put ourselves in their place and understand from their perspective. We see that every day at Pilgrims Hospice!"
The warm Hawaiian music and elegance of the dance touched us all. And sitting hula, or "noho" hula, allowed our clients to "sing and dance and tell a story" from the heart while sitting in a chair. As Jane says, "It's wonderful to see the smiles it brings to their faces as they participate."
Our Shared Humanity humanity
Jane Tulloch has been with Pilgrims Hospice since September 2015, primarily as a Compassionate Companions volunteer. Since her training, she has companioned two clients, bringing smiles and comfort to both the families and their loved ones.
Recently Jane touched the hearts of many as she spoke about Compassion: Recognizing our Shared Humanity at our Sunflower Luncheon.
"Compassion isn't pity. It's more than empathy, or feeling another's pain. Compassion starts with the desire to make a difference for someone, and involves an action to enhance the quality of life of another - not out of pity, but recognizing our shared humanity.
As Compassionate Companion volunteers, through Pilgrims Hospice, we act on our desire to make a difference by visiting and spending time with those living with life limiting conditions, or facing the end of their life."
Sharing her experiences, Jane painted a clear picture of what companioning really means to our volunteers and to the clients that we serve. You can read the full talk here.
Jane - thanks for all of your contributions. You are our Volunteer of the Month!

  Sunflower Traditionsunflower
It's always heartening to hear that friends of Pilgrims Hospice have enjoyed a special event. Thanks to Joanne Chrisite, for supporting our Sunflower Luncheon and letting us know what it means to you.

"It's become a tradition
that I look forward to every year."
- Joanne Christie
"Thank You to all of you at Pilgrims Hospice. Once again, your Sunflower Luncheon was lovely - right from the warm welcome I received when I walked into the foyer outside the Empire Room, to your new MC Serena Mah, to the wonderful people I met at my table, to the absolutely delicious luncheon and to the moving words of Jane Tulloch. It doesn't get any better!!! It's become a tradition that I look forward to every year." - Joanne Christie
Jane Tulloch gave a moving speech over the Luncheon. Her quote from Mary, of what it means for her and her family to have a Compassionate Companion visiting her Mom, probably speaks for many of our clients:

"It's a blessing. We can't always be there and you have become a friend she loves and looks forward to seeing every week. Because you are not family, Mom shares her thoughts and feelings with you; you are a breath of fresh air for her. You get her to do things she won't do for us. Mom lights up when she talks about your   visits." (Read the full story here.)

Thanks to the care and generosity of our guests and sponsors, the Luncheon raised $25,000 to help fund our Compassionate Companions Program.
