With warm autumnal greetings to all, we look forward to welcoming you to the Museum this month for a wonderful range of dynamic programs celebrating the exhibitions This Is a Portrait If I Say: Identity in American Art, 1912 to Today and R obert Frank: Sideways. Join us to hear the perspectives of our special guests this month, including artists L.J. Roberts and Hasan Elahi, and museum director Richard Saunders '70. In addition, George Lopez shares his musical gifts, and we host the New England premiere of  Don't Blink the new documentary about Robert Frank. As always, our E-Bulletin sheds light on the Museum's many generous supporters who make all that we do possible. We thank you for your support, and hope to see you soon!

This Is a Portrait If I Say So: Identity in American Art, 1912 to Today

Closing October 23, 2016

Featuring sixty works by leading American artists from Marsden Hartley and Alfred Stieglitz, to Robert Rauschenberg and Yoko Ono, to Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Glenn Ligon, This Is a Portrait If I Say So: Identity in American Art, 1912 to Today represents the first exhibition to address the history and significance of non-mimetic portraits in American art. The show poses provocative questions about the very nature of likeness and personal identity.

Robert Frank: Sideways

Closing January 29, 2017

Robert Frank played a leading role in re-writing contemporary standards for photography.  This exhibition brings together a selection of rarely seen photographs from 1947, the year the artist first moved to the United States, to 1961, when he presented his first major museum exhibition. Moving away from sharply focused, traditionally composed images, he experimented with new focal strategies, low lighting, and unusual cropping. Robert Frank: Sideways was organized with professors Michael Kolster, Russ Rymer, and the students in the spring 2016 seminars, "Writing Creative Nonfiction Through Photography" and "Documentary Photography."

Transportation Funding for Student Visits

The Bowdoin College Museum of Art is excited to announce that it has limited funds to underwrite transportation for school groups, after school programs, and student organizations whose access to resources might limit their ability to visit the Museum. This opportunity is made possible by a recent grant from The Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Inc. and a generous gift from Alison and Jack Moore.

Endowment for the Assyrian Collection

It is with great pride that the Museum announces a recent gift by Michael Yadgar and the Yadgar family of Chicago to create an endowment supporting the Assyrian collection at the Museum. The gift is the result of a visit to campus by the family in August 2015, when they encountered Bowdoin's ancient and Assyrian collection.
