Wish Margie Good-Bye

Our beloved Administrator, Margie Nugent, is moving on to new adventures. Friday, September 30 is her last day. (She'll be gone by noon.) The Admin Search Committee, in partnership with the Board, is actively interviewing candidates and hopes to have someone in the office quickly. In the meantime, Peggy and Emily (our minister and ministerial intern) are filling in gaps as well as they can. Please bear with us during this transition.

Send Margie a good-bye message while she's still here!

Please join the
Covenant Committee
this Sunday -  October 2nd
following the service
for lunch and small group discussions
about what a congregational covenant is and why it's a key means to build community and strong relationships in UU congregations.
The Covenant committee is working this year to draft a FUSW covenant for approval by next year's annual meeting.  We want everyone to be aware of the process and active in providing input...
This is your opportunity to better understand a covenant and why it's important to us all!

Religious Education Corner

This Sunday, October 2nd, we need a Helping Hand (assistant) in the Coming of Age class. Helping Hands are second adults in the classroom to help us meet UUA recommendations for Safe Congregations. No preparation is required. Just spend an hour with some wonderful youth and share in their spiritual journey while cultivating multigenerational ministry at FUSW. The youth greatly appreciate your presence. Nancy Eisenman is leading a discussion about people and events that have influenced their lives and journey to this point. Contact Tracy to volunteer. Read more about Helping Hands here.

Our first reading will be "For Faith and Freedom". Please email Emily DeTar at [email protected] if you want a copy of the first essay.

The UU United Nations Office is our Share the Plate Recipient this Sunday.

Given that Bruce Knotts will be joining us, we find it fitting to share the plate with the UU-United Nations Office. Unitarian Universalist Association's (UUA's) United Nations Office (UU-UNO) is engaged in international advocacy work at the UN based on Unitarian Universalist (UU) values.

Next Community Night
Friday, October 7th

The first Community Night was a success! Join us next time on Friday, October 7th. This is an opportunity to deepen relationships at FUSW and feel the vibrancy of our community through informal fellowship, small group ministry and youth groups. Congregants of all ages are welcome and we hope that having multiple activities occurring simultaneously will make it easier for families to participate (e.g., while youth are in youth group, parents can attend a ministry group, team meeting or enjoy informal fellowship time). The Junior and Senior High Youth Groups meet at 7:00pm.  The anti-bias and racial justice study group meets at 7:30pm.  Community dinner is open to everyone at 6:30pm. *Bring your dinner* and a plate to share if you are able. We look forward to deepening the ties of community with you!

Click here for the schedule. To schedule your group in a classroom on Friday night, contact Tracy Breneman ( [email protected] ).

COFFEE HOUR IS MORE ABOUT CONNECTIONS

Of course we like to share a cup of coffee or tea, and a tasty treat, but here at First Unitarian Society of Westchester, after the service is our time to connect with each other.  We listen, we talk, we think, and we are in community together. We are growing as human beings and we need one another.  We are accepting of each other.  We are in relationship.  We lead busy lives, and the urge to keep moving is strong.     We ask for you to relax among friends, and make some new connections. Life is a journey, and FUSW is a guidepost for us.

JOIN TOGETHER FOR HOSPITALITY AFTER WORSHIP

In order to share coffee and conversation, we need volunteers to host our coffee hour every SUNDAY. Sarita Roy will be asking each of us
lovingly to take a turn.  There will be a few changes to our usual routine this year, but our sanctuary will be transformed into a cozy coffee and tea place that beats Starbucks for ambiance, and serves only FAIR TRADE coffee.
So, after service, please stay while we arrange chairs in circles, and set up some tables.  Your host will serve you coffee or tea FROM the kitchen so it will be easier for you.  Treats will be arranged on a table right in front of our beautiful scenic window.  The idea is to get to know each other, reflect on our sermon, and enjoy our community time on Sunday.

A Failing Democracy
Conversation Postponed

Our denomination has taken up the question of how our democracy is working and how it's not working as intended.
Our congregation, in partnership with the congregation in White Plains, will start a Democracy Team to participate in this denominational investigation. We'll begin by reading Parker Palmer's book
Healing the Heart of Democracy:
The Courage to Create a Politics of the Human Heart.

It seems many of you are interested in this conversation but need more time to read this book. We will reschedule. In the meantime, get a copy of Parker Palmer's book and get ready. This will be a theme for us for the next 4 years!

FUNDRAISER IDEA

Do you have an extra room in your home?
If so, YOU can help  FUSW raise money.

We would like to offer  homestays  of one or two days to UU members when they visit NYC & Westchester.  We will give them friendly tours, and advice about the best places to eat, and ideas on sightseeing.

Sue McAnanama will coordinate and all the money will go to augment our budget.    Please let Sue know if you would like to be part of this exciting outreach to provide loving hospitality to UU's from around the country....and beyond.
