The King's Resource Fair is taking place in the Spriet Learning Commons of the King Student Life Centre on September 19th from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. This fair brings together King's resources and services in one place for students of all years and programs. Representatives from different departments such as Centre for Creativity, Campus Ministry, ITS, and your King's Student Council, will be there to answer questions, inform students of the services they provide, and how to access them. The communications team will also be there, so please stop by at our table for a hello.

Incorporating Indigenous Spirituality into Church Liturgy and Practice
September 22, 2016 with Senator Nick Sibbeston in the Joanne and Peter Kenny Theatre. Sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Before contact, Indigenous people had their own spiritual beliefs and practices connected to their relationships with the water, land and the animals that surrounded them. While most Indigenous people embraced Christianity, many continued to practice their spirituality to honour the Creator in their own way. In a post-residential school world where the relationship between Indigenous people and Christianity has been tested and damaged, the Church needs to acknowledge and honour Indigenous practices. Including Indigenous cultural beliefs in the Liturgy is essential if the Church is to remain relevant to people's daily lives.
Senator Nick Sibbeston
is a member of the Dene Nation from Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories with a long history of involvement in public and church life. As a Residential School survivor, Sibbeston went on to become a lawyer and a politician, serving as Premier of the territory from 1985-87. He has represented the NWT in the Senate since 1999. He wrote about his relationship to religion in his recent autobiography, You Will Wear a White Shirt.

Than Clan: Lecture on Near Death Experiences
|
Dr. Eunice Gorman will be presenting an informative and interactive lecture on near death experiences on Monday, September 26, from 4-6 p.m. in KC 004 for the Than Clan, the academic thanatology club at King's. A near death experience (NDE) is a personal experience associated with death or impending death, encompassing multiple possible sensations including detachment from the body, feelings of levitation, total serenity, security, warmth, the experience of absolute dissolution, the presence of a light and even more! All are our welcome to our first event of the year, and we hope to see you for this engaging and FREE lecture!

Joseph Boyden is an award-winning novelist and will present the inaugural Principal's Lecture on Contemporary Indigenous Issues for this year's first King's Hour.
Joseph Boyden will explore the relationship between art, education and survival through the lens of his personal experience with a focus on the historical and contemporary experience of First Nations peoples. The discussion will reflect the perils and inner strengths of marginalized groups and how the liberal arts and creativity open a door to growth and joy.
Joseph's award-winning writing career contains a common theme of the inequality of the First Nations peoples. He is best known for his books Three Day Road, Through Black Spruce, which won the 2008 Scotiabank Giller Prize, and The Orenda, which was named the winner of CBC Radio's Canada Reads 2014.

Lecture with Jonathan Kuttab

Hosted by the Mennonite church of Canada, Jonathan Kuttab will be speaking in the Joanne and Peter Kenny Theatre on September 29th from 7-9 p.m. Jonathan will be speaking on human rights, international law, and UN resolutions in the Palestinian context. A lawyer, he is a recognized authority on international law, human rights and Palestinian and Israeli affairs.

With the controversial assisted-dying Bill C-14 now law, this timely discussion will bring together a cross section of experts from various fields. This two-part event will begin with a lecture from Dr. Jeff Blackmer, MD'95, Vice President, Medical Professionalism, Canadian Medical Association, who is leading the way through the heavily-debated legislation. Following the lecture a panel discussion and audience question and answer period will be moderated by Carly Weeks, MA '04, Journalist, The Globe and Mail.
