The stakes are high. The polls are close. The differences between the presidential candidates are stark.
Even the "Boss" couldn't resist jumping into the partisan fray. I am told that Bruce Springsteen stays out of politics while on tour. His fan base is just too broad to take sides. However, in Pittsburgh last weekend, at his 2nd to last concert of his "River" Tour, Springsteen waded in. He walked out on stage with a booklet in his hand and announced that it was the text of the U.S. Constitution, given to him by a fan. Then, Springsteen added that, on the cover, someone had written, "F_ _ _ Trump." The crowd burst into applause and cheers. The Boss had made his political statement. He followed up with his Bush-era song, "Long Walk Home." Again, the crowd cheered, when he sang the words,
"Your flag flyin' over the courthouse
Means certain things are set in stone.
Who we are, what we'll do
and what we won't."
That's right, Boss. Who we are? We are Democrats. What we'll do? We will support our country, work hard for justice, and protect against danger from outside and from within. What we won't do? We won't give up, and we won't give up our rights.
This past week, Barbra Streisand also joined in. At a Clinton/Kaine fundraiser, she debuted her new Trump parody to the tune of "Send in the Clowns." One verse was:
"Hillary's kind...
Smart, that's clear
While she is giving us hope...
Trump is selling us fear
Look how he changes his views
every time that he speaks
It's lie after lie
Can't take eight more weeks!
However, we can take 8 more weeks, and we will. Trump is trying every trick in the book. When Hillary Clinton's doctor announced she had pneumonia, Trump supporters sent out a video of a doctor who had never examined Clinton, speculating that she had a terminal illness. This week, in a fruitless attempt to win the support of women voters, Trump announced he had a plan that would give women 6-weeks maternity leave. (Hillary Clinton released her plan a year ago, advocating for 12 weeks.) It is already leaking out that Trump's plan discriminates against LGBT parents.
The issues will be discussed in the upcoming presidential debates. Join us for the first debate on September 26, 2016 at 7pm at the historic Texas Theater, located at 231 West Jefferson Blvd in Oak Cliff.
