Superintendent's Message - Welcome Back Students!

On behalf of the Board of Education, Administration, Teachers, and Staff - Students, we are thrilled to have you return to our halls and classrooms!

Parents, we are excited to have you as our partners in your child's education. While this has been a busy summer, hiring new personnel, providing professional development, enhancing curriculum and programs, augmenting our technology, beautifying our environment, among other such activities, we have also managed to design our district goals.

I plan to share them in greater depth at the second Board of Education meeting on Monday, September 19th; and I invite you to attend. This meeting will be held in the Lincoln/Roosevelt School Auditorium and starts at 7:30 p.m.

New Year Starts with a Bit of Magic in Roxbury

The 2016-2017 school year started off with a little magic and a pirate in the K-12 district, literally.

Superintendent of Schools Loretta Radulic said the excitement was in the air when staff and students began on Tuesday, September 6.

But even prior to that, teachers were welcomed back with an inspirational opening day message from Dave Burgess, the author of "Teach Like a Pirate".

Why the Arts Matter in Education

September 11-19 is National Arts Week where the impact of teaching the arts in the public schools is recognized. Roxbury's children are very fortunate to have art classes in grades K-12 and it's important that we don't take this fact for granted. We know that a strong art program contributes to a child's success in school, on standardized tests and builds self-image.

According to Joann Hughes, the Visual Arts Lead Teacher at Roxbury High School, "The Visual Arts teachers in grades K-12 are planning a variety of events for the coming year. We promise to entertain, inspire, and make you proud to be a part of the Roxbury Community. Join us as we celebrate our student's achievements!"

Family in Roxbury Hopes Golfers Will
"Raise the Roof" for Spina Bifida Awareness
Golfers will tee off September 26 at the Berkshire Valley Golf Course in Oak Ridge to raise money for Levi Spencer, a 4-year-old Roxbury native born with spina bifida, a birth defect that paralyzed him from the hips down.

The first annual Golf Scramble is one of a series of fundraisers held as part of "Raising the Roof for Levi," an online fundraiser created by Spencer family supporters, known as Team Levi, that will help finance an estimated $100,000 of handicap-friendly renovations at the Spencers' Succasunna home.

These events are "just for raising awareness about the birth defect spina bifida," which is the family's major goal, said Levi's mom, Jillian Spencer. Her young son's condition is a rare one; less than 200,000 cases occur annually in the U.S.

Participants will golf in groups of four. Each group will kick off the event at one of the course's 18 holes, then rotate once everyone sinks their shots. Families and businesses alike can sponsor a hole, which will feature a sign or plaque with their names. Sponsors can enjoy gold, silver or bronze status, which offer different advertising opportunities depending on the amount donated.

Accents on Dance Upcoming Programs

Hip Hop Dance After School

Hip Hop is an eclectic street style of dance that is performed in running shoes to current upbeat tempos. The dynamic moves taught in Hip Hop class are fast, stylish, funky and similar to those seen in music videos.

This class is appropriate for high energy dancers that are driven by a beat. Similar to a Jazz class, Hip Hop is broken down into 3 parts - warm up, corner work/technique and choreography. Students in a Hip Hop class will work on their strength, flexibility, and musicality through intricate fun and fast paced funky choreography.

Since the tempos are usually quicker than any other dance form, the choreography in a Hip Hop class provides a great cardio workout and is also a fun way to exercise the mind and memory.

(Children should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers to class)

Date:   Throughout the 2016/2017 School Year
Time: After-School at the Designated School
Location: Franklin, Jefferson, Kennedy, and Nixon Elementary Schools
