What is the Holy Bowl?

Every year, Garces plays San Joaquin Memorial in the Holy Bowl.  Everyone looks forward to either playing in, or watching, the oldest parochial school rivalry in the history of the Valley.  The two Diocesan rival football teams have met 50 times over the years, with SJM leading the series, 27-20-3.  The longtime Diocesan rivalry was further enhanced when Holy Bowl "Saturday" was inaugurated 20 years ago, which now includes the other fall sports teams along with the football game.  That same year the Thez-Carroll Cup was created, awarded annually to the school that wins the most varsity competitions between Garces and SJM during the entire school year. Generations of Ram football players remember the Holy Bowl game as the highlight of their season. In addition to the Holy Bowl, Garces has faced SJM twice in the Valley Finals for football.  In 1991 SJM avenged an early season loss to Garces, beating the Rams 27-10.  Then there was the "Super" Holy Bowl in 2002.  Garces was undefeated and Memorial's only loss was to Garces earlier in the season.  Garces led 35-11 early in the 4th quarter, when suddenly the game lived up to its title.  The Panthers combined Hail Mary passes and onside kicks to close within three points before Garces held on for the 42-39 victory. Although we have been intense rivals over the decades, both schools have always shared a common mission of educating generations of Rams and Panthers in our Catholic faith.  Best of luck to all of our teams who play the Panthers on Saturday!

Message from
A.J. Gass
Dean of Students

Dear Parents,

As we begin the new school year, I would like to give a short version of our Detention Policy.  Most of our policy hasn't changed; however, there have been a couple changes in room assignments.

The full policy and procedures for any school related issues can be found in the Parent Student Handbook.

DETENTION PROCEDURES

1). TARDY
If a student is tardy, they are notified of the detention at the front desk upon arrival.  Being tardy is an automatic Friday Morning Detention.

2.) FRIDAY MORNING DETENTIONS
Students must be in Room 52 by 7:15 AM.  The door is locked at 7:15 AM and no late admittance is allowed.

3.) MINOR INFRACTION
Standard detentions can be served on any of these 3 occasions:

Monday after school in Room 53

Wednesday at lunch in Room 2

Friday before school in Room 52. Friday Morning Detention rules apply.

4.) TEACHER DETENTION
The time and date is designated by the Teacher who issued the detention.

5.) ADMIN DETENTION
The time and date is designated by the Administrator who issued the detention, but it is usually a Friday Morning Detention.

Garces students are notified in person, or by email, from the Teacher, Staff or Administrator who issued the detention.  It is solely the student's obligation to make sure they serve the detention in the appropriate time frame.

We only notify parents when a student fails to serve his or her detention.

To assist our students and parents, Garces is using the HERO app to post and track detentions.  Students and parents can easily download the HERO app to an iPad or Smart phone.  The HERO app will answer any questions as to whom, when, and why detentions were issued and when they were served.  It is the student's responsibility to track his or her detention using the HERO app.

To setup the HERO app you must go to the HERO website first, not the app.  Please click on the HERO App link below:

New Garces Girls Basketball Coach Kevin Edgmon

Garces Memorial High School is honored to announce that Mr. Kevin Edgmon will be joining the Garces family as the new Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach for the Rams.  For almost two decades Kevin has been attributing to the success of our local students and athletes on and off the court.  In 2001 Kevin joined the Shafter High School staff as a Special Education Teacher and was named the Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach where he coached for twelve years. Kevin's dedication to the students is undeniable and a true fit at Garces Memorial High School.  Coach Edgmon said, "As I embark on this great opportunity at Garces, I am thrilled not only to be coaching basketball again, but to be coming to the Garces family which is so rich in tradition.
