MRS. MELISSA PERL
DIRECTOR OF JUDAIC STUDIES

Although many people believe that Sefer Devarim is just a repetition of that which was already stated previously in the Torah, the reality is that when analyzed in more depth, it is a book that reveals foundational principles that illuminate the Torah's view of how man can live a life of meaning. After only a brief review of key events that took place in the Midbar in the opening Parsha, the tenor of the sefer shifts dramatically. Parshiot V'etchanan and Re'eh delve into the philosophical and spiritual realities of what man's relationship with G-d will be like in the land of Israel. These parshiot explain the relationship between mitzvah observance and the potential for success in the land, focus on the importance of making the Beit Hamikdash a spiritual anchor, and describe ways in which man must put G-d at the center of his life in order to prevent him from going astray.
After delineating ways in which man should go about creating a spiritual connection with G-d in the land, last week's Parshat Shoftim shifts to what might be considered more mundane topics of how to set up the government in the land. However, when viewed more deeply, one can recognize that Parshat Shoftim describes what man should do to create an ideal society. In this society the Beit Hamikdash is at the epicenter both literally and figuratively, the king leads the people towards a more spiritual and committed life, and the other "government positions" are the Navi, Kohen, and Shofet. This Parsha describes a government in the land of Israel where the mission for the government is not only to keep the peace but also to bring people closer to G-d.
And then we reach this week's parsha, Parshat Ki Teitze. At this point we shift from a focus on the national to a focus on the individual. However, here too, there is a twist. The laws of the family, business, and proper conduct that are outlined in our Parsha are not just about making sure that society functions and that law and order are kept but rather focus on how we can generate kindness, preserve dignity, and create systems to help those in need.
Taken together, these Parshiot weave together a picture of a society where G-d is at the center, where success in the land is dependent upon adherence to the mitzvot, where the government officials are all focused on increasing spiritual growth, and where even the laws governing interactions between man and man stem from the notion that G-d wants us to follow in His ways and to emulate Him by always acting with justice and righteousness.
Far from a book simply repeating what has been stated in the past, the focus in Sefer Devarim is on outlining major principles regarding how to set up an ideal society in the land of Israel. When we read it through this lens we realize that Devarim is not just an ancient text but is instead a relevant guide for how we can conduct ourselves today. By putting G-d at the center of our lives in all that we do, even in the 21st century, it will serve as a catalyst to always act in a moral and ethical manner and to live a life where we experience meaning, fulfillment, and spiritual connection in our every interaction.
