Dear Alumni,

Welcome to our inaugural Alumni Newsletter. We are excited to share News and Events, celebrate weddings, births, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and mourn the passing of your loved ones with you. Please help us spread the word by sharing this Newsletter with your friends!

For some of you, Livingston was the first place where you welcomed Shabbat, found your best friend for life, or where you learned how to waterski. For others, Camp Livingston was where you grew up, learned how to make your bed, and how to move past your fears with the help of your friends. For many, it was a place that strengthened Jewish identity and Jewish pride.

Now, as a Livingston Alumni - whether you spent one year or 20 years at our first location in Indian Hill or at our current property in beautiful Bennington, IN - you are part of the Livingston family that has been growing and thriving for 96 years. You have been a part of the magic that is Camp Livingston, and you will remain so, helping to make Camp Livingston stronger all summer, all year, and forever.

SIX Camp Livingston directors in ONE place!

Thank you Russ Rosen, Janet Elam, Marcie Wolfson Bachrach, Andy   Brown, Josh Klynn and our current Executive Director Aaron Slovin for joining us for the weekend!

Alumni Spotlight!
(Harold Lessure: Attended camp in 1969-1974)

Our Livingston Alumni Spotlight of the week is Harold Lessure!

Harold is the owner of Lechtzer Incorporated and currently holds a faculty position as visiting scholar at Carnegie Mellon University. Harold is a former professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University.

Haraold and his wife, Melissa, have two children; David and Rachel. Harold's family is packed with current and past Camp Livingston campers! David and Rachel are both current campers, Harold attended Camp Livingston as did Harold's father, a camper at our Indian Hill site, went on to later be the Camp doctor. Harold's uncle is the oldest living Camp Livingston Alum in the family. He attended camp in the late 1920s.

Harold enjoys staying active with his faith and sports. He is a member of Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, actively plays tennis, coaches soccer and played soccer in college, is involved with the Jewish bowling league, and even played in a competitive pinball league where he went to the world championship.

When asked what his favorite camp activity was, he couldn't answer with just one because he loved them all! His top are:

Lake: Swimming, kayaking, sailing, fishing; he received his junior lifesaving certification.
Menorah: Harold's bunk built the Menorah at Camp Livingston which, as we all know, is used for Friday night Shabbat Services and cabin photos. He remembers vividly collecting stones from the trails and can point out several of the stones he chose in the Menorah.
Prayer: Family-style meals and Shabbat celebrations in the Chadar is a great memory for Harold. "Candles were lit, challah was passed out, blessings were made, and we all went outside for songs."
Picking berries: He would pick berries and put them in large coffee containers; several containers were collected. The Clarks who are the current third-generation caretakers of Camp Livingston in Bennington would make delicious jam.

His favorite camp meal was french toast. The campers had a contest to see who could eat the most, and at just 14 years old, he won by eating 40 pieces! That's right, 40!
Alumni Reunion Recap:
Alumni Reunion Weekend! August 19-21

August 19-21 was a time for Alumni from all years to come together and leave behind the stresses of adult life by spending three days/two nights in the beautiful rolling hills of Southeast Indiana. Fifty Alum attended, including six former Camp directors! The weekend was filled with everyone's favorite classic camp activities, from Shabbat Services, nightly campfires, delicious meals, ropes course, climbing wall, lake/pool activities, arts and crafts, a variety of sports options,  and so much more! A huge thank you to everyone who participated and made this weekend happen. We can't wait to do it all over again next summer!

Thank You!

Thank you so much for your continued support and interest in Camp Livingston. We work hard each and every day to ensure that our campers have an opportunity to learn the same Jewish values and have the wonderful, fun and exciting experiences that you had during your time at camp.

If you would like to support Camp Livingston financially, please click here to explore our many giving options. Each dollar you give helps send a child to camp and ensures quality programing for the children of our communities.

Just this past summer your dollars:
  • Helped start a new 3D printing program, which which taught campers how to print mezuzahs and many other unique projects designed by our campers and staff.
  • Helped extend 2 week camper sessions to full 4 week camp experiences.
  • Helped with much needed scholarship dollars for many families during a year where our camper numbers were higher than they have been in the past 7 years.
  • Provided new A-field equipment and materials for our glass studio.
We have a lot more work to do in order to keep serving future generations and to maintain and improve our facilities and programing. With your help, we can ensure the future of Camp Livingston for generations to come.
