Message From Board Member:
Kristin Miller

My experience with Deaf Access Services (DAS) began back in 1996 when I took sign classes. The classes were amazing! Taking these classes laid the foundation of my career and personal life. After taking classes for a year I had conversational level sign skills and knowledge of Deaf Culture.  These classes lead to an internship experience with Deaf Children. This internship gave me real life experience using sign language and the ability to continue a career path working with Deaf children.

Currently, as a Social Worker working with children who are Deaf gives
me great insight on challenges any person with any type of hearing loss faces. DAS is a resource for the children and the families I work with.  We are lucky to have an agency in our community such as DAS; which has provided opportunity for individual who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing through Advocacy and Education. DAS has taken on the challenge to educate the community about Deafness and how to better serve individuals with a hearing loss.  The work must continue and be supported.

When asked to join the Board of Directors; I asked the question - "Is this because of my profession or because I am a parent of a Deaf child?" Than answer was because of both reasons. I accepted the privilege to serve as a board member because DAS has expanded their services and this has impressed me as a community member and a parent.  Being a board member for the lasy year; I have seen the passion and commitment from the staff and board. I am excited individuals who receive services  from DAS in the Buffalo community are receiving support and respect. There is still much work that needs to be done but with the commitment the staff shows the future for all individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing is brighter.

DAS has provided programs to the community which now includes children.  I will continue to support programs that will assist Deaf children and their family members. This is an exciting time to be a part of DAS and their mission.
