YOUTH SPORTS ALLIANCE AWARDS $75,000 IN GRANTS & SCHOLARSHIPS

The Youth Sports Alliance (YSA) recently distributed grants and scholarships to local winter sports teams and athletes from funds earned at JANS Winter Welcome, Park City's premier charity fundraising event. More than $45,000 was granted to fund key projects such as $10,000 toward the newly remodeled water ramps at Spence Eccles Olympic Freestyle Pool at Utah Olympic Park and new sleds for the Wasatch Luge Club. YSA awarded $30,100 in training scholarships to 52 athletes in financial need competing for affiliated teams and 179 scholarships to economically disadvantaged elementary school students to participate in YSA's Get Out & Play after school 'learn-to' sports program.

PARK RECORD GUEST EDITORIAL:
Youth Sports Alliance helps child soar to new heights

Bari Nan Cohen Rothchild

"GOAP Program Manager Heather Sims told me that the first two days of the session involved six schools, seven locations, 127 scholarships, 15 buses, five vans, five ski shops—and I don't know how many professional coaches and parent volunteers—all working together to get 690 students out to enjoy sports like snowboarding, skating, freestyle skiing, Nordic skiing, Nordic jumping, alpine skiing, and more. "So many kids had first experiences this week," Heather told me, "I can't tell you how happy I was yesterday standing on the snow watching a bunch of kids who have never been on skis or snowboards before, wearing helmets, goggles, and huge grins on their faces. I knew who they were because I could recognize the skis and snowboards that Rossignol had donated (over 100 sets) and I had spent three nights with the staff at Switchback Sports fitting them. This program makes my heart happy."

SWITCHBACK SPORTS & ROSSIGNOL TEAM UP TO GET SCHOLARSHIP KIDS ON THE MOUNTAIN

Patrick Fannon and his staff at Switchback Sports teamed up with Ron Steele and Rossignol to provide 90 Get Out & Play Scholarship kids with skis and snowboards. These local youth will get the chance to learn to ski or snowboard at Deer Valley (skiing only), Park City Mountain and Utah Olympic Park this winter. Rossignol donated more than 100 sets of skis & snowboards to Get Out & Play, while Switchback Sports took the lead in distributing the gear to scholarship recipients to use during their lessons.

Sports Authority, Utah Ski & Golf, JANS & Ski Butlers helped fill in the gaps to provide gear for Get Out & Play's 127 scholarship recipients.

GET OUT & PLAY HEADS TO MIDDLE SCHOOL WITH HELP FROM VAIL RESORTS EPICPROMISE FOUNDATION

The Youth Sports Alliance received crucial startup funds from Vail Resorts EpicPromise Foundation to explore opportunities to expand Get Out & Play to Park City's 6th through 8th graders. Many local youth drop out of competitive sports at this age, but there are few opportunities to learn and engage in new sports. Get Out & Play programming for middle schoolers will fill that gap to keep this age group engaged in the outdoor opportunities available in our active community.

Vail Resorts EpicPromise Foundation also made a significant contribution to cover the increase in transportation costs for the elementary school program, while continuing to provide deeply discounted lessons and lift tickets for youth while they learn to ski and snowboard through Get Out & Play.
