50 Years: Assisting Communities to "Breathe"
As we end the celebrations across the nation to highlight 50 years of alleviating the pressures and symptoms of poverty, tensions in the nation are on the rise. Communities are crying, "We can't breathe!", and Community Action Agencies are continuing the war on poverty to assist communities. Although most are associating the chant with one aspect as it relates to police-community relations, community action agents are aware that the ills that are plaguing these communities are rooted in the symptoms associated with poverty. So, while the nation leaders are trying to figure out a solution, CAAs are still in the trenches doing the work many choose not to do, because they want an easy way out. Discourse is not new to community action. For another 50 years, CAAs will continue to be instrumental in assisting communities to "breathe".
Volunteer Risk Management
During the holidays, volunteers are running to shelters, food distributions, toy drives, coat and blanket drives, etc. Most organizations welcome them with open arms without considering the levels of risk which may expose the organization to negative ramifications. Throughout the year, organizations should evaluate their volunteer programs and continue to utilize best practices to efficiently and effectively execute a successful volunteer program. Denise Harlow Named New CEO of Community Action Partnership RPIC IVA Consortium would like to congratulate Denise Harlow on her appointment as CEO of the Community Action Partnership. Denise had been serving as the organization's Interim Chief Operating Officer (COO) since June and has been with the organization since 2011. As CEO, Harlow will spearhead a number of strategic initiatives to help the national network of over 1,000 Community Action Agencies (CAAs) increase their capacity to improve the local conditions of poverty affecting low-income people, families, and communities.

A valuable opportunity for professionals from around the country to come together to discuss strategies for meeting new challenges. The Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) track will focus on HHS CSBG initiatives. It will also highlight best practices related to anti-poverty efforts, performance management, and performance measurement. Sessions will include updates on ROMA Next Generation, Organizational Standards, State and Federal Accountability Measures, and a discussion with the Office of Community Services about their vision for the future of the Network. The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) track will focus on DOE WAP initiatives and grantee management issues. Sessions include updates and discussion of recent DOE WAP policy, program notices, guidance, and future direction of the program.
