Tonight: A Time for Quiet Reflection

Labyrinth Walk and Taizé Worship Service
|
Join us tonight for our monthly service in the style of Taizé at 7:30 p.m. in Buchanan Chapel.
The Taizé service provides an opportunity to gather in a contemplative, prayerful setting at the end of a busy week. Candles; easy-to-learn songs from various countries, traditions, and languages; and a period of silence all contribute to a time to reflect and to open oneself to God. We gather for this service on "fourth Fridays at Fourth Church."
As happens each month, the service will be preceded by opportunity to walk the labyrinth in Anderson Hall between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. This meditative walk takes approximately twenty minutes, and members of the labyrinth ministry team are present to offer guidance for first-time labyrinth walkers.

Wanted: Old and Broken Bikes
|
Bicycle Collection Drive This Saturday
|
Do you have a worn-out or rusty bicycle that you're no longer using? Why not donate it to those in need?
The World Mission and Social Justice Committee is collecting used bicycles this Saturday, September 24. The bicycles will be repaired by Working Bikes, a nonprofit organization that donates more than 6,000 bicycles each year to international and local partners who provide bicycles to those in need who often have no other form of transportation.
Donations should be brought to the Delaware entrance of the Gratz Center between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. that day.

Standing in Solidarity with Our City
|
On Saturday, September 24 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, people all around Chicago will step into their neighborhoods to call for peace.
As part of this Chicago Calls for Peace initiative, the Interfaith Coalition against Racism (ICAR)--in which Fourth Church is a partner--will gather at the LaSalle Street community park (1140 N. LaSalle) at noon on Saturday.
All are invited to join in this one-hour, one-city, every-neighborhood gathering to show solidarity throughout Chicago to our commitment to combat violence and its causes and to call attention to the many local, often overlooked, initiatives that address violence.

Discussion of Realities and Responses
|
This Sunday a discussion about the refugee crisis in war-torn Syria will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Buchanan Chapel. Presented by the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago and the Syrian American Council, "Humanitarian Crisis in Syria: Realities and Responses" is sponsored by Fourth Church, Chicago Sinai Congregation, and Temple Sholom and will feature presentations from the Multifaith Alliance for Syrian Refugees, the American Relief Coalition for Syria, Karam Foundation, and more.
We hope you'll join us for this important discussion that outlines the effects of the devastating war in Syria. More information about this event is available online here.

Growing Together in Faith
|
Today our eighth-grade youth and their leaders head to Camp Geneva in Holland, Michigan, for their first Confirmation retreat, a weekend that promises to be full of fun and opportunity to grow together in faith. Please join us in keeping these youth and leaders in prayer as they travel and spend time on retreat.

Raise Awareness with Women at Fourth
|
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Monday, and each year Women at Fourth joins Between Friends to tie purple bows on the trees outside the Manse as a witness to the issues of domestic violence.
Next Friday, September 30 volunteers will tie these bows on the trees starting at 10:00 a.m. All are invited to join in this advocacy opportunity. For more information about how you can help, contact Anne Ellis.

A Book Study with Nanette Sawyer
|
Looking for something new to read? Next month the Academy for Faith and Life will turn to the next book in its series of book studies, this time on The Righteous Mind: Why People Are Divided by Religion and Politics by Jonathan Haidt.
Nanette Sawyer, Minister for Congregational Life, will lead the discussion on this work, in which author and social psychologist Haidt explores the origins of the divisions in our society and points the way forward toward mutual understanding.
All are invited to this discussion, which starts Thursday, October 6. Copies of The Righteous Mind are available at the Book Nook during Coffee Hour on Sunday mornings.

John Sherer, Organist and Director of Music, and Vicky Curtiss, Associate Pastor for Mission, invite you to join them on a mission trip to Northern Ireland next summer. This trip will provide a unique opportunity to offer the gift of music and learn about the impact of Ireland's religious, political, and ethnic conflict as a way to understand conflict in other settings.
Participants will give concerts in various churches and cities. They will also explore
communities in Northern Ireland to learn from mission partners about peacemaking and reconciliation there as well as how to build peace and promote justice in our own communities.
Applications for this July 10-19, 2017, trip--which are due on October 15--can be completed online. This trip will immediately precede the spiritual pilgrimage to Iona, Scotland, which will take place July 19-30, 2017; participants may join both trips but will need to register separately.
If you'd like to learn more about this trip or the trip to Iona before signing up, an information session will be held next Sunday, October 2 at 1:30 p.m. in Buchanan Chapel. The trio Briste Music will play traditional Irish music, and participants in this summer's Young Adult mission trip to Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will share stories with the group.

Join Us at Lyfe Kitchen This Sunday

The fellowship group ThirtiesForties invites all to "break bread" with them this Sunday, September 25 following the 11:00 a.m. worship service. The group will meet in the Narthex and will then walk to Lyfe Kitchen (831 N. State) together.
This informal lunch is a great way to meet others in ThirtiesForties and learn about upcoming fellowship, service, and spiritual enrichment events. Bring a friend, and enjoy a meal with the group!

Do you wonder if there could be a relationship between your genes and getting cancer or developing a heart or neurological disease? Do you wonder about pharmacogenomics--whether your genetics can impact medication use?
These questions and more will be answered at a special Cornerstones event, "The Genetics of Adulthood," on Friday, October 7. Carmen Williams, Genetic Counselor in Obstetrics and Gynecology-Cancer Genetics with the Northwestern Medical Group, will lead the presentation, which will be proceeded by appetizers and dinner.

Ushers for the 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. worship services
In2It Café instructors to teach thirty-minute enrichment classes-from yoga to chess to dance to creative writing-to Chicago Lights Tutoring students on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, the first week of October through mid-December, from 5:25 to 5:55 p.m.
