PROGRAM COMMEMORATING 9/11

On Monday, September 12, 2016, Middle School students gathered for an assembly about 9/11.  The assembly was led by Mrs. Seeno and included a powerful video clip and informative slideshow.  After that presentation we were fortunate to have with us a retired firefighter, Tom McDougall, who worked at the World Trade Center site for four months following the tragedy.  Students listened to Mr. McDougall and asked very interesting questions. The assembly was very moving and educational.  Students continued asking questions and discussing 9/11 in their social studies classes after the assembly.

RABBI DAVID ORLOFSKY
SPEAKS TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

On Monday, the Middle School had the privilege of listening to Rabbi David Orlofsky.  Rabbi Orlofsky is an extremely proud Alum of HANC and has tremendous hakarat hatov to our illustrious Yeshiva.  Rabbi Orlofsky was incredibly funny and the students were completely engaged throughout his shiur.  The message was extremely powerful.  Rabbi Orlofsky explained that most people go through Elul and the Yomim Noraim with dread and fear but really it is about realizing the idea of "Ani l'dodi v'dodi li."  I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me as this relates to our relationship with Hashem.  Rabbi Orlofsky explained that Elul is the time to realize that Hashem loves us and is "in our corner" and wants us to succeed.  Rabbi Orlofsky gave the students a plan of how to make sure that this year is "THE" year and not just another year.  The plan included picking a vision for oneself, starting with small steps that can certainly be accomplished, moving on to something which is attainable but will require some effort and he concluded by telling the students to write their plan down.  Writing something down, helps it become more concrete.  The students and faculty were incredibly inspired by the presentation.

EIGHTH GRADE ENGINEERING

Last Friday, the 8th graders had an engineering science lab. We had to make the biggest box possible using only one piece of paper and two feet of tape. The box needed to be able to hold at least 50 grams, and if there was a tie for size, the box that could hold even more weight would win.
Everyone teamed up with a partner and, together, tried to make the biggest box they could. The biggest box turned out to be 4.4 inches square and was able to hold a minimum of 50 grams. Everyone improves their engineering and teamwork skills with each lab, and the 8th grade science classes can't wait for the next one!

CURRICULUM NIGHT

This year's curriculum night took place on September 15th The evening began with a Dvar Torah and opening remarks by Rabbi Hecht.  He discussed the theme for the year, welcomed some of the new teachers, and the fact that Middle School will be the pilot school in HANC for a 1:1 chromebook program.  Mrs. Schneider spoke about some of the new faculty members as well some of the curricular programs including GO MATH! and Collections which is our English Language Arts curriculum.  Following the opening remarks, parents followed their son/daughter's schedule and went from class to class.  The parents only had the opportunity to spend eight minutes per period.  By the time the night was over, the parents had a great idea as to all of the wonderful things that their children would be learning this year.  As one parent said, "Thank you for today's orientation; it was informative and well organized. It was nice to see tenured staff and many of the new staff members made a great first impression. "

NEW STUDENT LUNCHEON

On Wednesday September 21, 2016 the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County had its first annual "new" student luncheon.
The new students, students that did not attend a HANC school for 6th grade, gathered together with Dr. Levey, the Director of the Counseling Department and Mrs. Miriam Steiner, Middle School social worker, to enjoy pizza and soda.
The students first went around and introduced themselves.  Following introductions, a glass jar full of questions was passed around the room, with each student having an opportunity to "draw" a question from the Jar.
Questions ranged from: "What is your favorite topic?, What type of music do you listen to?, Who is your favorite artist to Do you have a pet?"   We learned that one student had a pet bunny rabbit named "Chaim" who ran away from home.   If you see "Chaim", let me know!
The students had a great time getting together and learning something new about each other.  Also, the students discovered that their experience of being "new" was not unique to each one of them as individuals.

Stay tuned for future new student programs!

NOTE TAKING SKILLS

Today in Morah Hakimian's Jewish History class, Mrs. Fryman offered a session on note taking. Students discussed being prepared for class and how to organize their notes. They identified how to set up a piece of paper with subject, name, date, key terms, and notes. Students asked questions about techniques and they reviewed active listening skills. Mrs. Fryman will be going to the 7th grade boys' class soon and will be returning to classes again to offer a session on study skills.
