Holy Bowl was AWESOME!

The Holy Bowl was another great event on our campus. The Friday night rally was full of surprises with great team videos, dances, games, and a special "rap" performance by Asst. Principal of Student Affairs, Guy Dees and his back up dancers - Dean of Students, AJ Gass, and Boys Basketball Coach, Brian Dignan. On Saturday, Girls Tennis, Girls Golf, Volleyball, Boys Water Polo and Football all had wins against San Joaquin Memorial. The varsity football pre-game ceremony with the balloon rosary rising to the sky while the crowd sang the National Anthem served to remind us of our mission and what makes us stand apart from the other local high schools - our Catholic faith.  The student section was once again full of school spirit. Our Herd is fantastic! The half time show by the cheerleaders and the band was amazing. And the icing on the cake was the boys winning the football game and keeping the Holy Bowl trophy at Garces! Thank you to all our parents who helped to make the day extra-special -  signs at every venue, great food all day, great crowds at every event, and a smile everywhere on campus!
Jockey Club Honorees
Scott Boylan & Patrick Burke

Congratulations to Scott Boylan and Patrick Burke who were honored by the Bakersfield Jockey Club as Outstanding Student Athletes for their respective sports on Monday at a luncheon at Hodel's.  Scott was honored for Football and Patrick for Water Polo. They are true scholar-athletes. Scott has a 4.4 GPA and Patrick has a 4.5 GPA. Both young men are stand outs in the class room and on the playing field, or in Patrick's case, in the pool!
BMOA Driven by Art

On Monday, the Garces student artists who worked on the Bakersfield Museum of Art's Driven by Art public art project accompanied Mr. Mark Brown to the Grand Opening of the exhibition. There are 33 fiberglass trucks that have been sponsored and painted by local artists. They will be on display throughout the Downtown area beginning in October.  The Garces truck will be on display in front of St. Mary's Catholic Store located at  2021 Chester Ave. A big thank you to our sponsor, Mrs. Melissa Fortune '72, for including our students in a wonderful community art project!

Dear Garces Families,

At Back to School Night, I discussed with you that the best part of providing your child with a Catholic education is the opportunity to work in partnership with you, our families.  Our parents are the primary educators and our role at Garces is to foster a supportive, faith-filled learning environment where students grow spiritually, academically and socially.  While you may not agree with every decision we make, please trust us.  We are acting in the best interest of all of our students and the school.  Our focus on a daily basis is to provide a safe, loving and nurturing environment for our students.
While we welcome parent involvement, we ask that you please respect our process for resolving issues on our campus.

When a student has an issue, please encourage your student to try and resolve the matter first.  Conflict resolution is a valuable asset to have as an adult and we want our students to be comfortable going to the appropriate person to get clarification and resolution to an issue.

If your child is unsuccessful getting the issue resolved, then please follow our process as well.   Students and parents should start with the first contact and work their way up if they are unable to get the issue resolved.  We have this process in place so we are consistent and treat our students, parents, faculty, staff, coaches, and administrators fairly and respectfully.

Instructional Issue:
  1. Teacher
  2. Department Head
  3. Assistant Principal of Academic Affairs (Debra Sakowski)
  4. Principal (Myka Peck)
  5. Superintendent (Mona Faulkner)
Disciplinary Issue:
  1. The person who issued the detention
  2. Dean of Students (A.J. Gass)
  3. Assistant Principal of Student Affairs (Guy Dees)
  4. Principal (Myka Peck)
  5. Superintendent (Mona Faulkner)
Athletic Issue:
  1. Coach
  2. Athletic Director (Joan Finch)
  3. Principal, (Myka Peck)
  4. Superintendent (Mona Faulkner)

Please know that the steps in the process cannot be skipped.  We will follow the same procedure, the same steps, on every issue.   It is an important facet of how we are viewed in our community.  We have a process in place to ensure that we are seen as consistent and compassionate when dealing with student issues.

If you have any questions about our conflict resolution process, please call me at 661-327-2578 or email me at [email protected]

May there always be a Garces.
