What is this "autumn" that I hear people talking about, and when will it ever reach the southern US? I love the feel of the crisp, autumn weather and it seems to rejuvenate everything and everyone - even our cats!

With autumn comes an increase in cat shows and entries. We've pulled ourselves out of the lethargy of summer, and we're back on the road again! Here's wishing everyone a pleasant turn to autumn next Thursday (or a return to Spring for our antipodal subscribers) and safe travels!

Teresa

Last fiscal year, which is also our show season, we ended the year with a very positive financial surplus.  The financial report for the first quarter of the current fiscal year (May - July) indicates we are doing even better than a year ago.  Much of our growth is in registrations and new cattery names.  Since registrations are our core business, this is great news.  Many of our new cattery names come from North America which is a sign we are attracting new breeders which means more cat registrations and down the line more entries at our shows.  Obviously, the CFA brand is of value to our many breeders and exhibitors.  The quarterly financial report will soon be shared with our club secretaries.  If you would like to have a copy, contact your club secretary.

With our continued growth, we have hired additional staff to keep up with the work.  We recently added John Colilla as a contract employee working in our IT arena.  Cross-training is important so we can carry on the work should someone be out for an extended period of time.  We recently advertised for a second person to work in scoring our shows, someone to back up Shirley Dent.  That new hire is now in place.   Our Marketing Director position has been vacant for some months but we have filled that position with a part-time contract employee.  Welcome aboard to our new staff members.

Please note that even with our increase in registrations, we continue to process our work quickly.  80% of our registrations are submitted via Ecats and we consistently process those requests within 24 hours.  Our snail mail registration requests are usually processed within ten work days.  If your work is delayed, please contact Verna Dobbins  to see if there is a problem.

Our next major event is the Dr. Elsey's CFA International Cat Show to be held in Novi, Michigan on November 19-20.   Our entry clerk is now accepting entries.   When we held our last show in Novi (2013) there were many requests to return to that venue.  We are able to do that this year and we need your support for this show.  Remember, in 2017 the show moves to Portland, Oregon, so this is your last chance to attend this show in the East for a couple years.  Jim Flanik  is our show manager and the assistant show managers are Megan Hiemstra  and Joel Chaney .  First, check our Blog  if you have any questions.  Many of the answers are there.  If you don't find the answer on the Blog, feel free to reach out to our show management team.  I hope to see many of you at this show in November.

September already, it's hard to believe that it's "back-to school" time with Fall just around the corner.  I hope everyone enjoyed the summer.  As we enter a new season, we at C.O. welcome two new Associates: Amanda Ganni and Angela Watkins.   Amanda will be our lead Associate for eCat registration when Jorden starts training as our back-up Scoring Associate.  Angela is our new Marketing and Communications Coordinator with an extensive background in marketing, public relations and communications.  Her background includes Communications and Media Manager for GOJO, manufacture of PURELL, L'OrĂ©al, USA in New York and most recently US Acute Care Solutions.  She has hit the ground running with her initial focus on the upcoming C.I.S.

We still have awards from the 2016 Annual that have not been claimed. Please contact Kay Chamberlain to claim your award.  Kay will be more than happy to assist you in doing so and can be reached at Kchamberlain@cfa.org

As we get closer to the C.I.S. please keep in mind that if you are in need of a "Letter of Invitation" for assistance with your Visa please do not hesitate to contact Allene at atartaglia@cfa.org  As you are aware the 2016 C.I.S. will be held the weekend of November 19 -20 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Mi.  As always, safe travels throughout the show season and the C.I.S.!

Now for an update from Allene on the upcoming 2016 Dr. Elsey CFA International Show.

Some of you might know that I attended each International Show from its inception in 1988 when it was first called the Purina Invitational and there were Regional Qualifier shows, up through 2009 when it was the CFA International Show. Many changes to the show have occurred in the past 6 years during my absence, from a name change to the National Show to the World Show to splitting the show into two shows - Red and Purple (love the colors!) - to a much more streamlined presentation at the end of the show. I'm pleased to see the name is back to the CFA International Show (with the addition or our named sponsor, Dr. Elsey). However, one thing I'm grateful to see hasn't changed is the passion and dedication of the folks who volunteer to pull the show together! It takes a tremendous amount of effort by the show committee to bring you a quality, well organized, exciting show. Every show committee I've worked with over the years, including this year's committee, never failed to impress me with their willingness to dedicate so many volunteer hours to the event. Do I think I'm lucky to work with such a great group of cat fanciers? You betcha, but I'm also honored for the opportunity.

This year's show is shaping up to be another outstanding International show. Although the nuts and bolts of the show you've come to expect are still there - great judging, education ring, agility, breed booths, vendors and more - there is always the excitement of entering the show hall for the first time, watching the judges handle this year's cats and wondering which cats will be in the Finals. There will be a bit more pageantry leading up to the Best in Show (BIS) judging and presentation. Prior to the start of BIS, we will present the overall top 3 in Agility and the top 3 in the Household Pet category. And there are a few changes for the ring finals. The Best through fourth Best Champion/Open and Best through third best Premier/Open will be awarded in each ring and there will be top 20 for Championship in Allbreed rings.

Entries are now open, sponsorship opportunities are filling up and information on the website, www.cfainternationalcatshow.org, is updated on a regular basis. Join us for another memorable International cat show!

Cat Talk
Teresa Keiger
Editor

The October issue of Cat Talk is wrapping up and will be on its way to the printer shortly! I'm really excited about this issue as our feature section takes a look at avoiding interpersonal and legal conflicts as breeders and exhibitors: the importance of having contracts, planning for you cats in case something happens to you, and the roles that the judging program and CFA ombudsman play in working out disputes. We also introduce our advice for inquiring felines column "Dear Catty."

Christmas is coming and kittens are probably already working on their letters to Santa. If you suspect that your family feline just might be asking Santa for a 32oz bag of freeze dried chicken, ask her to send it to Candilee Jackson for our "Kittens' Letters to Santa" feature in the December issue.

Curious to see what Cat Talk magazine is all about?  We'll have several recent issues on display and for sale at the CFA booth at the International Show. If you have any suggestions for the magazine or for upcoming feature stories, drop by the booth and let me know, or email me at tkeiger@cfa.org.

A list of our donors contributing $100 or more in August is available  here

Supporting Fix by Five Months Recommendation:  The Marian's Dream Fix by Five Months Program advocates the recommended age for spaying/neutering cats be moved back four to six weeks to no later than 5 months of age. This small change would remove the risk of unwanted litters by female cats which are in their cycle and could become pregnant. Winn's board members unanimously approved of the Feline Focus Task Force call for veterinary practitioners and professional associations to recommend sterilization of cats by five months of age. Download the recommendations of the Feline Focus Task force on Sterilization.

'Ain't No Stopping Us Now' Bria Fundraiser for FIP Research, Phase Two: Donations made through the raffle are used only for FIP research. We have many more prizes and variety than in past raffles. There is something for everyone. Entering is easy:
  • Donate to the Bria Fund via the Winn Feline Foundation
  • Look at the prizes and pick your favorites
  • Complete the raffle form selecting a prize number for each $5 donated
  • Patiently wait until the end of the raffle to hear if you won or donate and enter again before October 31, 2016
Prize winners and prize donors will be notified by the second week in November.

Other Ways To Give: Two recent Winn supporters made recent significant donations as  a way to remember a special cat in their lives. Holly Aglialoro has made gifts to the  Ricky Fund for HCM in memory of her cat Augustus. Donna Garrou, in memory of Quasimodo and inventor of the Kitty Kollar Ă” , is raising money through Kitty Kollar Customers Care at Winn for research related to small cell lymphoma, IBD, pancreatitis and other related illnesses. The Kitty Kollar  is an improved medical device used with esophagostomy feeding tubes in cats. The Winn Board has approved naming a 2017 Winn grant project in memory of each donor's special cat. More about Augustus' and Quasimodo/Kitty Kollar's story here.
An important Planned Giving (tax) tip for August - You may own property or other assets that pass directly to your heirs on your death and bypass your Will or Trust.  For example property held in joint tenancy (sometimes called joint tenancy with right of survivorship) will pass to the surviving tenants upon your death.  Assets that let you name a beneficiary, such as life insurance, annuities, IRAs, pensions, etc., generally will pass to the designated beneficiary directly, regardless of your Will.  Make sure you advise your attorney about all of your assets when preparing your estate plan.

September Legislative Update

The Proposed De Minimis Rule of 2016

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has published a proposed rule about dealers, "exhibitors" and de minimis exemptions to exhibitor licensing. The new rule would amend existing regulations to reflect changes to the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) Congress made in the 2014 Farm Bill (Docket No. APHIS-2014-0059). The meaning of "exhibitor" as used in the AWA does not carry the same meaning cat fanciers ascribe to the term.  Most cat fanciers will not be affected by the exhibitor exemptions as cat and dog shows are expressly excluded in the AWA definition. However, the dealer definition and new breeder exemption in the proposed rule raised concerns that retail pet store and fanciers/low-risk exemptions to USDA licensing may be affected by this new rule.

In 2013, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) finalized the retail pet store and fanciers/low-risk exemptions to dealer licensing. Sellers of certain animal species, including cats, who sold these animals to the public were required to be licensed as dealers unless they met the requirements for the retail pet store exemption. Alternatively, to avoid the licensing requirement, the seller can adhere to either the fanciers or wholesale breeder exemption. The Retail Pet Store exemptions is based on public oversight of face-to-face sales while the  breeder exemptions  for breeders with four or fewer "breeding females" are based on low risk to animal welfare (9 CFR §2.1 (a) (3) (i), (iii) and (vii)). For more information, see the CFA Legislative Alerts web page.

When the 2013 changes were made, the exemption for people who made no more than $500 gross income from the sale of certain animals was retained as it was still part of the AWA. This made no difference for cat and dog breeders as neither species was covered under that exemption. However, the language was deleted from the AWA in the 2014 Farm Bill requiring a corresponding change in the regulations. APHIS has developed a new exemption, Section 2.1(a)(3)(ix), similar to the other breeder exemptions above, that is applicable those who breed and sell at retail or wholesale dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, cows, goats, pigs, and sheep. For species covered by the other breeder exemptions, there is no change. If anyone breeds cows, goats, pigs or sheep that fall outside the farm exemption (iv), they may appreciate the addition of subsection (ix).

Although APHIS discusses the breeder exemptions, it declined to clarify the meaning of "breeding female" despite the Farm Bill Conference Report stating that the term causes confusion and urging "APHIS to clarify that only those females capable of reproduction and actively being used in a breeding program qualify as breeding females". The proposed de minimis rule of 2016 addresses the dealer and exhibitor definitions and exemptions to exhibitor licensing, and makes no changes to rules finalized in 2013. A breeder meeting the 2013 exemption requirements does not have to be licensed as a dealer. However, a cat owner or breeder who also exhibits animals in an occasional television or film appearance, or other exhibition, should familiarize themselves with the proposed rule.

The proposed definition of exhibitor is:

Exhibitor means any person (public or private) exhibiting any animals, which were purchased in commerce or the intended distribution of which affects commerce, or will affect commerce, to the public for compensation, as determined by the Secretary, and such term includes carnivals, circuses, and zoos exhibiting such animals whether operated for profit or not; but such term excludes retail pet stores, an owner of a common, domesticated household pet who derives less than a substantial portion of income from a nonprimary source (as determined by the Secretary) for exhibiting an animal that exclusively resides at the residence of the pet owner, organizations sponsoring and all persons participating in State and country fairs, livestock shows, rodeos, purebred dog and cat shows, and any other fairs or exhibitions intended to advance agricultural arts and sciences, as may be determined by the Secretary.

As with breeder exemptions from the dealer licensing requirement, exhibitor exemptions ensure APHIS is focused on covered activities where the risk to animal welfare is the greatest. The de minimis exemptions are designed to exempt low-risk situations involving a limited number of animals that are maintained in well-understood circumstances and for which there are well-understood care standards. In the proposed rule there are three licensing exemptions for certain year-long, seasonal or infrequent exhibiters. Click here for an illustrated look at how these exemptions would work.

The proposed rule, Docket No. APHIS-2014-0059, and all the official documents are available online.  Comments must be received on or before November 2, 2016. They may be submitted either online through the Federal eRulemaking Portal  or by mail or delivery.

Exploring Two CFA Programs:
CFA Ambassadors and the CFA Ambassador Cats
by
Candilee Jackson, Ambassador Program Chair and
Karen Lane, A-Cats Chair

CFA has a wealth of outreach programs designed for the varying interests of both exhibitors and spectators. Among these are two outreach programs which on the surface, appear to be identical. The Ambassador Cat Program (A-Cats) and the Pet Me! Cats of the Ambassadors are very different.

The Ambassador Program  is "people" based: Ambassadors are informal representatives of CFA, who use the show hall and OUTSIDE CFA opportunities to impact the lives of spectators in positive and meaningful ways. These human Ambassadors, along with their Pet Me! Cats, (PMCs) help make spectators feel welcome at our shows, and foster an improved understanding of cats, cat care, CFA recognized breeds, and cat shows in general. Additionally, PMCs are active in the community at homecomings, pet expos, schools, libraries, hospitals and senior centers.

Pet Me! Cats can be household pets or pedigreed cats. They can be competing in the show hall or they can just be in the show hall for the excitement of visiting with spectators. These special kitties are easily identified in the show hall by the bright yellow pennant attached to a cage, by the brand-new banner nearby, or both. These kitties are in the show hall and other locations specifically to be PETTED, HELD, and LOVED ON.

In a CFA show hall, PMCs do not have special benching or Ambassador Cat benching cages and grooming spaces. These kitties can be ANY cat which loves to interact with people. A cat does not have to be officially registered in the Ambassador Program to be a Pet Me! cat (although they are certainly welcome to do so). Pet Me! Cat parents may show as much or as little as they wish, and benching / grooming space is not automatically provided free of charge. (Some clubs do offer it, however; you should always check with the entry clerk before bringing a Pet Me! Cat with you to a show.)

Becoming a Pet Me! Cat is simple: just contact Candilee Jackson and she will add your cat to the list! The only requirement is that the kitty must love strangers and being loved on.

The CFA Ambassador Cat Program is a structured outreach and marketing program designed to educate the general public about CFA pedigreed cats and cat ownership. Presently there are 25 active members in the program. And there are three members who are "on temporary leave" for medical reasons.

Being a member of the CFA Ambassador Program is not required to being a member of the CFA Ambassador Cat Program; they are two separate CFA programs. Although the names are very similar, they have different missions and different commitments.

Anyone wishing to be an A-Cat member is asked to fill out a membership application and submit the application to Jim Flanik, secretary of the A-Cat Program. We are looking for breeder/exhibitors who have had a history of being part of CFA in the show hall and in other ways, such as a breed council member, a CFA club member and other work within the cat fancy.

Our members are required to attend a minimum of tens shows per season. This program has a tradition and camaraderie among its members. Most of our members have been Ambassador Cats for several years. For this commitment and dedication, they receive an official CFA Ambassador Cat cage and a display area for their use at our shows and other CFA events. Our cages and equipment are bright orange paw-print material accented with purple cushions.

Because of the continued commitment to being at shows year after year, some of our A-Cats actually have their own fans and people who look forward to visiting with them at their local shows each year. Some of our A-Cats have a Facebook Page. Our members are readily happy to take photographs of our spectators with their cats, both children and adults.

A-Cat members are given breed trading cards to give to the public and most recently they have breed banners to display their cats. They have all agreed to allow their cats to be used for show and event advertising.

To learn more about both of these programs, read about the Pet Me! Cats in this October's issue of "Cat Talk" and about the Ambassador Cats in the December issue.

The Feline Historical Museum had cats prowling the museum again during August, which allowed the general public to interact with and learn about Maine Coons, Persians, and Ragdolls. The event was highly successful, with more than 250 people visiting over the three days.

We keep trying to make it easier to find individual cats and their histories on The History Project web site, which has grown to include information on almost 300 early cats, plus photos of thousands more in the galleries. We already have a listing by color and breed, and a chronological one in our Gallery. We have just added a new directory, alphabetical by cat name. There's a useful search option on our opening page, as well.

Cats, alphabetical (by color and breed) - http://www.cat-o-pedia.org/cats.html

Cats, alphabetical (by name) - http://www.cat-o-pedia.org/directory.html

Cats, chronologically (by year) - http://www.cat-o-pedia.org/gallery/index.html

Our Gallery section now includes the Burmese breed! The Burmese cat, as we know it today, can truly be considered one of the major successes of twentieth century breeding. In the latter half of the last century it came out of virtual oblivion, and was successfully established as among one of the most popular of all the recognized shorthair championship breeds. We appreciate the support of The National Alliance of Burmese Breeders in the establishment of this latest gallery.

Our latest look at an influential person in the early Cat Fancy is a short history of Gertrude Taylor, President of CFA from 1928-1933. She was also instrumental in sharing knowledge of the cat fancy, through the management and distribution of "The Cat Courier" magazine from 1918 until 1938 when it merged with "The Cat Gazette", which was CFA's official magazine at the time. Learn a bit more about Mrs. Taylor at http://cat-o-pedia.org/people-GertrudeTaylor.html

The CFA Foundation Board wishes to acknowledge and thank The Cat Fanciers' Association for its generous $4,800 donation. We appreciate their support.

Ambassador Updates:
The new Pet Me! Banners have been sent out to regions 1-8 over the last several months.  Please let Candilee know if another is needed!  In the works is the revision of the CFA declawing brochure to make this informational document more eye-catching and relevant.  Hopefully this will be available by the end of the year.
Ambassador Hosts Needed for International Show!  The Ambassadors have been invited to have a "welcome" station at the International Show in Novi, Michigan, in November.  Two Ambassadors are needed to staff this station, hand out show hall brochures, answer questions, and coordinate three tours, two on Saturday and one on Sunday morning.  This is the purrfect job for someone exhibiting a single cat or coming to the show just for the excitement of being there!
If you are interested, please contact Candilee Jackson through her email:  pawdancertonks@att.net .

Regional Reports:
Region 1 -  Stacie Egeler reporting for Chris June
Stacie was involved with the Pet Me! Cats and Kid's Corner at the recent NEMO show in Sturbridge, MA.  This was the fourth year putting on this show, and they doubled their gate this year.  Hopefully, the large number of Pet Me! cats we had this year will keep our attendance climbing.
Stacie was excited about the enthusiasm of some of their junior Ambassadors, and the part they played in educating spectators and younger kids about different breeds and the inner workings of a CFA show.

Shannon with Wisha
Shannon is an 11 year-old cat lover going into seventh grade this fall.  She attended the NEMO show last year with a friend and was like a sponge, soaking up the atmosphere and learning all she could about showing and pedigreed cats.  This year she couldn't wait to return, and was an active participant in introducing our Pet Me! Cats to the spectators, either walking Stacie's Burmese around on leashes or talking to families with young children where they were benched.

William is a 12 year-old boy going into eighth grade.  He also attended the show last year with his mom, Stephanie, who is on the show committee.  This year, when he learned that the popular "Fish Finder" game was in danger of being cut, he stepped up to the plate and offered to organize it all on his own.  He made the numbered paper fish, hid them throughout the show hall, and checked all the participant entries to find those that qualified for the final day's prize drawing.  He also proudly shared his Selkirk Rex as a Pet Me! cat, and could be seen sharing this handsome kitty with various spectators and families. Great job, William!

Amelia and new friends
Amelia is a 14 year-old girl going into the ninth grade.  Amelia worked both days as a steward responsible for double rings.  On the second day, I noticed Amelia giving high fives to younger kids, then watched as she explained to them what she was doing as a steward, and let them help by putting the cage ribbons back on the judging stand.   The smiles on the faces of those younger kids as they quietly executed their assigned responsibilities under Amelia's supervision and encouragement was something to see.

"It is always thrilling to share my passion for pedigreed cats as a CFA Ambassador.  But this year, I was even more inspired to watch the next generation pick up the Ambassador's torch and share their love of pedigreed cats in ways I, as an adult, never could."

Region 5 - Shari Millar
Region 5 was lucky to have a nearly sold out show in Glendale, California, at the Opposites Attract show. The gate is always very strong there, and lots of cats were adopted as well as kittens and retired show cats sold, making this a very busy show for us Ambassador people and cats. Shari enjoyed meeting a lady who had been gone from CFA for 20 years and was returning to show. This venue is also popular for the families. Pet Me! Cat Danny and Shari's cat were very busy all day with loads of petting (and it's not just the kids who enjoy petting!). She even had one "trio pack" of young girls come back four times to pet the cats. The parents love it and are always so appreciative when cats are available to touch and hold.

Region 6 - Candilee Jackson
The MWR has enjoyed two pawesome shows since our last report in August.  Topeka Feline Fanciers held a 6-ring show on Labor Day weekend that brought in a lovely gate of first time cat show visitors.  Additionally, outreach was provided for a brand-new exhibitor who is wonderfully excited to join our hobby.  This past weekend saw the American Gothic Cat Club host a spectacular show in Peoria, Illinois, and welcomed over 1000 visitors over the two day show.  Tons of questions were asked, and lots of laughter and petting was the norm

Kudos, congratulations, and merci to all the members of N.E.M.O who orchestrated a fabulous show in Sturbridge, MA. It brought back memories of those shows of yesteryear when it wasn't all about points and rosettes, although the club did have beautiful rosettes for the winners. The show started with a really good turnout of entries, which made the count nice.  The fun started early Saturday morning with the "Fish Finder" game, where small fish are hid throughout the show hall for exhibitors to find. Imagine a fish game at a cat show!  Cats love Fish!

The club continued its hospitality into the night by offering a Bar-B-Que (at a very reasonable price) a time when exhibitors and judges could relax and mingle. At time I still remember at many a hospitality rooms that clubs offered on Saturday evenings of the show, a place to make and meet new exhibitors, and perhaps a new friend. An opportunity to talk and brag about our beautiful cats, and time to share our stories.

Sunday was off to a start with a Cat and Exhibitor Costume Contest. I had the privilege to judge along with Coco Helmqvist form Sweden, via cell phone. Coco was a founder of the club.
Yes, those times we thought were gone are alive thanks to our friends in N.E.M.O !!  The times of sharing the excitement that showing our beautiful cats still resonates among us. Let's all keep that in mind the next time we enter a show hall, it's not all about winning, it's about keeping and making NEW friends. More  than that, it's about our CATS  !

See you at the shows!

John Wellman with his cat Geoffrey as a parrot

On August 13 th , the upper portion of the CFA Region 2 held their annual picnic, auction and bingo game at Hudson-Parcher Park in Rainier, OR. The weather turned out to be a pleasant 84 degrees and not the 90's as predicted.

The picnic was wonderful with many delicious salads and deserts. And the auction was just short of fabulous. Not only had the almost 50 attendees brought wonderful items but we had many donations from John Cariglio, regional sales manager for Weruva and Rich Van Engers & Penny Johnson, owners of Sturdi Products.

Pam Moser and Lorna Malinen
We also had some surprise guests: Bobbi Irie from Utah, Sande Kay from No Cal and our own Lorna and Bob Malinen from Aloha Or. Such a treat to see all of them and get a chance to visit. (Bobbi, if you come next year, we will bring you a chair.)

On September 24 th, the Seattle Cat Club along with Grandview Cat Club will be holding their annual show in Portland, OR at the Portland Expo Center, Hall A. The club has an awesome Newbee package for CFA first time exhibitors. The exhibitor gets a free double cage, 10 free raffle tickets and special benching with a mentor or other helpful exhibitor. This was very successful last year and I hope it continues to be a success.

Congratulations to Cenla Cat Fanciers for a wonderful show in Alexandria, LA. It is so nice to have a hotel show with a homemade breakfast and lunch and a showhall with natural lighting. That was until the rains came. Louisiana has experienced so much rainfall in the past month. Many of our cat exhibitors have water in their homes and are dealing with issues most of us have never experienced. Our Regional Disaster fund has helped those we have learned about. Keep Louisiana in your thoughts and prayers. The raffle table at the show was over 30 feet long and included many popular items.  Congratulations to Warren Joubert and his team for a successful show.

Our next show will be Foot of the Rockies September 24-25, 2016 in beautiful Denver, CO. Take a break from the heat and breathe in some rocky mountain air by supporting this show. This is one of the few show producing clubs still hosting shows in Colorado and they need your support.

The region will have a gap from the Colorado show until December 3, 2016 when our Regional Fall FUNdraiser show will be held in Rosenberg, Texas. This one day, 6 ring show is licensed so check it out. We are planning a great day with raffle items, homemade food, great judges and lots of fun. One special raffle item is handmade cage curtains by our very talented Kathryn Queen. Click this link to view the curtains and how to purchase a raffle ticket. You do not have to be present to win, and this raffle is open to all. You won't want to miss out on this one of a kind item. https://www.facebook.com/kathryn.queen.3/videos/1076070902485605/
Other items planned are Sturdi-cage, Science Diet food, a 30 minute visit with a Veterinarian, and many more. We look forward to seeing everyone in Colorado and in Texas.

The region's generic coupon we have on the web is working quite well. The clubs are getting more coupons from our region's web site than their own coupons.
We started a new program by requesting spectators to give us their names and email addresses. Karen Lawrence will start accumulating them and will send out show announcement to spectators for future shows
Our region is very active in social media. We are a member of Pinterest and have our own Facebook page. You can check out what is going on in our region through these social media sites at: https://www.facebook.com/cfagreatlakesand https://www.pinterest.com/carmencitamarie/great-lakes-region-cfa/
Show Reports
Monroe Shorthair Club - August 21st
We might have been low on count, but we were sure high on the fun!  Monroe Shorthair held their annual show on Sunday, August 21st and even had air conditioning!  There were lovely vendors to shop from, and home-cooked food from Betsy's Cafe!  For a Sunday show we had great spectator attendance!  There was plenty of time to spend socializing with our CFA family and the spectators.  Monroe Shorthair looks forward to seeing you next year!

Sacred Cat of Burma - August 27-28
Sacred Cat of Burma Fanciers held their 44th annual show on August 27-28, 2016.  We had a great entry and wonderful exhibitors; as always we appreciate everyone's loyalty to our show. Birmans were in abundance and the competition was stiff in all classes.  Our talented judges had a tough job, but all came though with flying colors!  Our raffle is always one of the best of the season and many happy people went home with their prizes, including gold and diamond jewelry.  Thanks to all who attended and we look forward to seeing all of you again next year.

Opposites Attract "ran the board" with their show in Glendale. Especially
considering it was the first show the club put on at this showhall it
really exceeded. The large, well-informed gate had a great time talking
to exhibitors about the different breeds and household pets.

Many thanks to the Hemet Feline Fanciers for producing one of the
friendliest, most fun and relaxed shows around. I personally enjoyed
watching all the first-timer kittens making their debuts. The bake sale,
raffle and lunch benefiting Southern California Abyssinian Rescue made it
a good deed to over indulge in deliciousness.

Now that the weather is starting to turn in the rest of the country, it is
the perfect time to visit the Southwest! Superstition in Phoenix on
October 13 and Poinsettia in Glendale, CA on November 26 are ready to take
your entries.

Region 6
by Mary Auth, Midwest Regional Director

The success of every show need not be measured by the number of its entries, but by the character of its environment and the fun that was created and the people engaged.  That certainly can be said about two of the Midwest Region's summer shows.

The Topeka show (the Midwest Region's southwestern-most show) invited exhibitors and spectators to jump on the Topeka, Atchison and Santa Fe train for fun.  Allene Keating as the train engineer led her crew and provided a fun atmosphere, great gate and grand points to push one Midwest Region cat over the top.  Astral Charm Sun Dance, bred and owned by Robert and Debbie Rosas, granded at the show, along with two Gulf Shore Region cats.

Topeka judge Brian Pearson, clerk Jeff Phipps and Joyce Kempf's granddaughter ham it up at the end of the show.

Topeka Judge Darrel Newkirk took the fun part seriously with his ring steward and allowed himself to be decorated with Tootsie Rolls.

American Gothic welcomed exhibitors from  across the country to Peoria, Illinois for beautiful weather and a terrific raffle (as always). While the number of entries may have been disappointing, but at least one exhibitor went home with a new Grand Champion.  Acadiacoons Windham, bred and owned by John and Nancy Hitzeman, earned enough points to cross over the top.

One remarkable item to mention about the Midwest Region is the number of new exhibitors being introduced to the Fancy. At the Peoria show, no fewer than four new exhibitors were present, plus two relatively new exhibitors, and making finals, getting off to an exciting and rewarding start. An exhibitor drove down from Minneapolis to show her Bengal and another came from Texas to show a Persian.

Small shows may very well be the way to attract new exhibitors - giving them a relaxing atmosphere and a chance to learn the ropes at a slower pace.  It is primarily for that reason that the Midwest Region is experimenting with 4-ring shows.  We anticipate four such shows, with the first being November 5 in Gray Summit, Missouri.  The second 4-ring show will be in January in Gardner, Kansas. Two more dates are being investigated in the northern and eastern parts of the region. We are doing our best here to preserve show dates and cultivate more.

(l-r): Marilee Griswold, Jan Rogers, Wendy Heidt, and Jennifer Redding went down the rabbit hole at Ocicats International show
What a pleasure it was to be at our Ocicats / Maine Street show the first weekend of September! Even though the temperatures still felt like the long hot summer, just knowing it is September tells me that Fall is around the corner. Seeing many friends that I had missed, and the opportunity to make new ones reminds me why we all do this. With the judges dressed to match the fantasy theme and Marilee in a long white curly wig, the momentum was catching.

Our first 50/50 raffle was a huge success with the Region making almost $400, and the winner, Kelly Koonce, donating her portion to the rescue organization that she works with. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Mark your calendars NOW! I have just learned from their show management team that the National Capital Cat Show is in the works for 2017!! It will be held on their traditional date of the second weekend in September in Chantilly, Virginia! I am so excited we will have this show next September - it is a Southern Region must that we always look forward to.

Another Southern Region must is coming up the end of September - Freestate Felines in Gaithersburg, Maryland is holding their 6 x 6 show. A flyer and all the details can be found on catshows.us, along with special fees and discounts.

Y'all come see us at a Southern Region show soon!!

The Japan Dancing Cat Club held CFA show in Tokyo on past August 28th, one day 6 ring, 5 AB and 1 speciality. It has been very hot during this summer season in Japan, but this was the first show of the new show season. Theres was a nice Premiership entry of around 20 cats, including several who were working on their GPD title. Judges were Yukiko Hayata(AB), Yayoi Satoh(AB), Aki Tamura(AB), Megumi Yamashita(AB), Makoto Murofushi(LH), Toshihiko Tsuchiya(SH) and me(AB). This club plans to hold another show this coming January 2017. We all hope for a successful show in this season in Japan Region.

Have you ever been to Andorra ??

Cat-H-Art held its first show of the season on September 3rd & 4th in Andorra la Vella, a sovereign landlocked microstate in southwestern Europe, located in the eastern Pyrenees mountains and bordered by Spain and France with a population of 85,000 people.

Tourism is the mainstay of Andorra's tiny, well-to-do economy. An estimated 10.2 million tourists visit annually attracted by Andorra's duty-free status and by its summer and winter resorts.

CFA exhibitors have travelled from all Europe to join a fresh group of newbees. Because this event was a joint show with a WCF club, these newcomers wanted to try our show format for their first time.

With 6 AB rings and SSP rings in Championship, many exhibitors have discovered the excitement of finals and were unanimously won over by our system.

The Cat Fancy is completely new in this country. As a CFA sponsored event, the club did a special work to promote CFA by editing Show Guides together in Catalan (the official language in Andorra), Spanish and French.
The press relayed the event and the Andorran television has moved on Sunday to report it. You can watch it here: http://www.andorradifusio.ad/Noticies/un-centenar-de-gats-en-el-primer-cncurs-de-bellesa-de-pura-raca-al-principat

It was a fun week-end to do shopping in the luxury environment of the city while showing some of the best cats in Europe in very competitive classes in Championship and Kittens. Everybody has tasted the hospitality of the Principality, so expect a new edition of this show in the future.
