Carmelita Karhoff Will Receive Howard Hinds Memorial Award
A True Champion for Long-Care Residents and the Region's Ombudsman Program
Durhuam, N.C. - Triangle J Council of Governments and the Triangle J Area Agency of Aging are proud to announce Carmelita Karhoff, a Regional Long-Term Care Ombudsman,  has been selected to receive the Howard Hinds Memorial Award presented by the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long Term Care. The award honors an individual who has effectively advocated for long-term care consumers at the local level. 

Carmelita has been a true champion of residents in the Triangle J region and is incredibly passionate about spreading awareness on issues that affect those in long-term care programs. Most recently, she has become involved in the Dementia Inclusive Durham program, which aims to create meaningful and supportive environments for individuals with dementia in the region. The Consumer Voice could not have chosen a better individual to honor.

Carmelita joined the TJCOG staff in November 2006 after working in health care administration and management for over 20 years. Since then, she has provided extensive education & training on long-term care, acted as a liaison between communities, individuals, and facilities, and remained a passionate advocate for residents. Additionally, she served as Co-Chair of the NC Long Term Care Ombudsman Association, led the Music in My Mind initiative in Durham County and the TJAAA Sowing Seeds of Culture Change initiative, and held a leadership role for the North Carolina Action Collaborative for Excellence for Long Term Care project. 

The award will be presented during the Consumer Voice's 40th Annual Conference at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel in Arlington Virginia on November 3, 2016 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Hinds Award was established in 2005 in memory of the late Howard Hinds, a Tennessee District Long-Term Care Ombudsman. Howard was a true champion for residents and for the ombudsman program, as well as a passionate advocate on national issues.
