IHN @ The Cathedral
A big thank you to everyone who helped host IHN families last week!
Last week Christ Church Cathedral provided food and shelter to 5 Interfaith Hospitality Network families.
As is often the case, no one hosting opportunity looks exactly like the last one. In this case, the dynamics were very different because the children were so young. Active games and gym time were not as engaging as bubbles and building blocks.
Work schedules again made for a lot of coming and going at different hours. Thank you to the cooks for being flexible and leaving food for the latecomers!
One mother started a new fast food job and was scheduled to be off at 8:00 pm. She was ultimately asked to stay until 10:00 pm and she felt she couldn't say no on the first day. So at 10:00 pm she waited for a bus to bring her downtown and then walk to the church from Government Square.
It is in moments like these where we can give of ourselves and our time to help others. A long day for this mother ended with a meal and care for her children.
Speaking of meals, the Cathedral Youth Group prepared dinner Saturday and served as Evening Hosts. They were great with the children, and plan to help out as a group activity moving forward.
The cathedral's final host week this year is November 13-19. Please consider a time when you/your family can come down for an evening and welcome our IHN families.

Cathedral Academy is Back!

Wednesdays in the Fall
Are you intrigued by scripture? Does the Bible seem un-intelligible? How many times have you scratched your head when questioning and trying to
find answers in the Bible? The fall 2016
series of the Cathedral Academy will focus on introducing the Bible in a post-post modern era. The first class, facilitated by the Rev. Susan C. Lehman, will focus on the actual practice of reading scripture through the tools of textual analysis and by taking a narrative approach in allowing scripture to speak to us today. The Cathedral Academy offers classes of spiritual and theological substance to members of the cathedral, as well as the community, each fall and winter/ spring. The classes are free; registration is requested. They are offered on Wednesday evenings, and are structured as follows: Evening
Prayer at 6:05 pm, dinner at 6:30, class at 7:00, and Compline at 8:15. Register

Are you interested in serving in any of these capacities and want to know more? We are particularly seeking additional intercessors, chalice bearers, acolytes, thurifers, ushers/greeters, and altar guild members.

the Eucharist with those unable to
attend worship, make prayer shawls
with Hearts & Hands, assist members with transportation to church through RideSharing, or visit our homebound members, we invite you to participate.

Sabbath Keeping: Sacred Time for Holy People
Many people are acquainted with sacred spaces -- those spots where we pause and give thanks to God, those buildings where we pray and get put back together in solitude and community, the places that send us out to bear witness to God's love and peace-but
what we have lost as contemporary Christians is the ability to claim and live in sacred time.
As people caring pastorally for members of our congregation, carving out time for and experiencing Sabbath
are essential to our health and spiritual
well being. This weekend, set aside
the needs of others, and experience
self-care.
Retreat presentations exploring the biblical roots of Sabbath and its meaning for people past and present will be combined with plenty of time for reflection, music, play, feasting, and rest. Experience your own retreat,
nourishment, and renewal, and reclaim
Sabbath's relevance for your own life.
Our retreat leader will be the Rev. Jennifer Pedrick, Rector of St. Mary's Church in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
PLEASE RSVP no later than Friday
October 14
, so that we can reserve accommodations. Contact
Canon Sherilyn Pearce
or call the main office to sign up.
