Rare find of a Simpson Point
The Perry Area Historical Museum hosted the Ocmulgee Archaeological Society for a Native American artifact identification day on Saturday, August 20, 2016. Ladies from the General Daniel Stewart Chapter of the NSDAR served as hostesses. Dwight Kirkland, Professional Archaeologist, was present to identify items, as well as OAS members John Trussell, David Mincey and John McBride. The public was invited to bring their Native American artifacts to the museum and have them analyzed by this experienced group.

During this process they managed to record and photograph two Paleoindian points and a spatulate celt, a soapstone elbow pipe, and the base of an apparent quartz lanceolate point. The two Paleoindian points date between 12,000 and 12,500 years ago. A Simpson Point was also identified. This only the second found in the state of Georgia. This rare find will go in the record books as being recorded in Perry, Georgia.
