Water birds are still putting on the best show lately. We are saying good bye to many of the shorebirds, but now the first waves of waterfowl are showing up. And, let's not forget the herons and egrets who are in high numbers right now.

Bird of the Day
Hooded Merganser - Lophodytes cucullatus

Our bird of the day this week won its honors not because of its beauty, but because of its early

arrival and the identification discussion it provoked. This bird is a juvenile hooded merganser. It is lacking a hood (although you can see some wispy hints of getting a hood), but its bill is certainly "merganserish" with a long and narrow profile. To complicate things, right now, most of the waterfowl world is molting and they don't look like anything in your field guide.
