  ,

It is my pleasure to introduce you to our new newsletter!  New Futures' Futurecast is designed to inform you about our program, introduce you to our Scholars, and highlight critical issues in education and careers in the region.  In short, we hope to bring you closer to the New Futures experience.

This is an exciting time for New Futures; we are reconnecting with our alumni, selecting the next amazing cohort of Scholars to start their college journeys, and articulating enhancements to our program to build a stronger pathway from college into financially-sustainable careers. We are glad to have you with us on this journey - your engagement, support, and enthusiasm for our work is the fuel that makes so much possible for more people in our region.

And now.... On to the Future(cast)!

Best,
Julie Green, Executive Director

Scholar Weekend Success!

In August, New Futures Scholars traveled to the FLOC Outdoor Educational Center in West Virginia for our 2016 Scholars Weekend. Once there, Scholars got connected with one another, participated in team-building activities during our low-ropes experience, and conquered fears as they zip-lined through the mountains!

As stated by one of our Scholars, Hunter, "What I loved most about this experience is the fact that I was challenged to be my most authentic self. I also loved getting to know the other Scholars and finding, much to my surprise, that I connect with a lot of them! All in all, the experience was absolutely great, the natural landscape breathtaking, and the challenges so worth it." To see more photos from the 2016 Scholars Weekend, click here.

Latest in Post-Secondary Education

New Futures is a big believer in the economic benefits of community college degrees for our Scholars. Now, researchers have studied the value of community college credentials in Virginia and North Carolina and found that these shorter-term post-secondary paths can lead to higher earnings.
