Congratulations, Salena!

Congratulations to LAAC's Executive Director, Salena Copeland, for being honored as the  2016 Miles L. Rubin Public Interest Award  Recipient from Stanford Law!

Stanford Law School's Levin Center for Public Service annually honors one alumnus/a who has engaged in public service and had a significant impact on the community. This year that person is Salena!

She will be honored at an awards reception on October 10th along with National Public Service Award Recipient, United States Secretary of Labor, Thomas E. Perez.

Advocacy Updates
Legislative Update:
The Governor is slowly signing and vetoing the bills we've followed this session.

Vetoed
SB 1257 (Block) Pro Bono: As we've shared previously, we had some concerns about this bill, but we supported the goal of encouraging pro bono.

AB 2085 (Irwin) Office of Military Legal Assistance: We supported the goal of connecting active service members and reservists to pro bono attorneys and local civil aid programs, but we understand the Governor's concerns about the cost of the program. The legislature had envisioned a high level of staffing.

Signed
AB 2819 (Chiu) Unlawful Detainer Proceedings: Congratulations to LAAC board member Jith Meganathan who staffed this bill for Western Center!

Still waiting
AB 2192 (Salas) Transcript Reimbursement Fund: Still waiting to see if the Governor approves extending this critical program, which would sunset at the end of this year without this bill.

SB 881 (Hertzberg) Vehicle Violation s : It cleared both houses just in time, and will make minor, but good, changes to the Traffic Amnesty Program.

Funding Update:
LAAC has followed the State Bar as it responds to the lack of a dues bill this session. The State Bar will submit a request to the Chief Justice by September 30, asking her to issue an order authorizing them to collect dues from all California attorneys. We are happy to share that it seems the State Bar plans to ask for all opt-ins and opt-outs, including the mechanism that collects about $7 million for legal aid programs. When there is an opportunity for amicus support, we will let all IOLTA Executive Directors know. We've been emailing them more regularly with updates and links.
