SDYS students and families now have the option to receive important ensemble-specific updates via text to their phone. Notifications will only be sent for important updates or changes, e.g., rehearsal cancellation, concert times, etc.  To opt in, text "@" followed by your ensemble code to 81010.

For example, if you are an Overture Strings student, and you would like to receive text notifications from SDYS, you would send the message "@overturest" to 81010.

San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory - Chamber Music Program
Want to learn a different style of ensemble playing in a small group setting?  Chamber music is an excellent opportunity to enhance your musical abilities, improve performance confidence, and develop interpersonal skills.

SDYS' Chamber Music program is open to all current SDYS students and their friends who have had at least one year of experience on an orchestra or band instrument and can sight read music well. Invite your friends!

Rehearsals
Program will begin Monday, October 10. All rehearsals and coachings will take place in Balboa Park. 

* Option 1: Coachings will take place on Monday evenings from 6pm-9pm, 1          hour per session.
* Option 2: Coachings will take place on Thursday evenings from 6pm-9pm, 1       hour per session.

Concert Performance
All groups will be required to perform at the Chamber Music recital on Monday, January 30, or Thursday, February 3.

Tuition & Fees
* Current SDYS Showcase and Inspiration Program Students - $200 (10-Week Session)
* Non-SDYS students - $300
* Tuition can be paid by check to SDYS or cash at the SDYS office. Tuition is due at the time of application.

How to apply
Students should submit an online application and pay tuition by Monday, September 26.  Non-SDYS students will be required to send in a YouTube link of a 2 minute video of their solo.  Existing chamber music groups are welcome to apply. Please sign-up here if you're interested!
Theory Program
Theory Program
 
            
Learn the basic building blocks of music by enrolling in the SDYS Music Theory Program!  
 
Fundamental and Intermediate Music Theory will allow students to identify and explore music elements such as harmonic and melodic intervals, triad and chordal structures, and major/minor key relationships in music they hear in pop, classical, jazz, and other kinds of music in everyday life.

Students who complete Fundamental and Intermediate theory classes or pass the placement exam will be eligible to enroll in the Advanced Music Theory class.  

In the Advanced Theory class, students will begin to learn advanced music theory concepts such as melody harmonization, figured bass, SATB four-part writing, and beginning composition.  Select Advanced Theory class students will also have the opportunity to become an SDYS Teaching Assistant for the Fundamental and Intermediate Theory classes.  

Tuition:  
$200 for 10 sessions (Fundamental and Intermediate);  
$250 for 10 sessions (Advanced)

Placement Exams:
All new students in the SDYS Theory Program are required to take a placement exam, available at  http://goo.gl/Pm97vl

Musical Artstops
Musical Artstops at San Diego Museum of Art


In collaboration with the San Diego Museum of  Art (SDMA), students in Sinfonia, Wind Symphony, or Ovation Program are eligible to apply for  Musical  ArtStops

Students will have the opportunity to present a 15-minute performance centering around works of  art at SDMA. SDYS and SDMA staff members will provide training for students. 

Training will include an overview of content of the  music as it relates to the artwork as well as etiquette while engaging a group of museum visitors. Training sessions are available on the following dates:

SDYS Concerto Competitions

SDYS Concerto Competitions


 

SDYS offers an annual  concerto  competition in both the Showcase and Ovation programs to further students' opportunities at the highest level.  Winners perform their solos accompanied by their respective orchestra or wind ensemble.  

A limited number of candidates from the preliminary round will be selected to advance to a public performance.  During this final round, students  compete for the opportunity to perform as a soloist with a full orchestra/wind ensemble at an SDYS concert during the 16-17 season.  Students also  compete to win a monetary award to be used to further their musical education.
 
Applications will be available early September at  www.sdys.org.

Showcase Concerto Competition

Eligibility 
Showcase Program students in Wind Symphony and Sinfonia in good standing with SDYS are eligible to apply for the Showcase  Concerto  Competition.  Showcase students may enter competition on their SDYS primary instrument.

Ovation Concerto Competition

Eligibility 
Ovation Program students in good standing with SDYS are eligible to apply for the Ovation  Concerto  Competition.  Ovation or The Music Institute students may enter competition on either their primary instrument or piano, but not both.

Repertoire
One movement of a  concerto is to be selected. Non- concerto works are not permitted for use in the Ovation  Concerto  Competition.  Students must play the same movement from a concerto for the preliminary and for the final round.  If selected, the winner performs the entire concerto for the orchestra performance.

Repertoire is open for the Ovation  Concerto  Competition but must be approved by SDYS upon receipt of application due to copyright and rental availability of music from the publishers.

College Presentations

Interested in majoring in music? Come and participate in a panel discussion with the admissions deans at Juilliard, Ithaca College, and Eastman to learn about careers in  music and how to choose and apply to a school, audition, navigate the financial aid process, and more! The discussion will be held on Monday, September 19 right here in the park.

Following the panel discussion, there will be an opportunity to talk with each representative and learn about each school. Students, parents, and teachers are invited.


YoungArts Foundation Invites Applications for 2017 

T he National YoungArts Foundation is accepting applications for its 2017 Prize cycle. YoungArts provides emerging artists (ages 15-18 or grades 10-12) with opportunities to work with renowned mentors, access to significant 
scholarships, national recognition, and other opportunities. Support is offered in ten artistic disciplines: cinematic arts, dance, design, jazz, music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice, and writing. The application deadline is October 14. Learn more

2017 International Young Artists Competition - Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion.

S tarted in 1959, the Jefferson Symphony International Young Artists Competition celebrates the talent of outstanding young musicians. Held annually, this one-day 

 competition--originally a contest meant to give local students their first experience at  public  performance--has evolved into a gathering of international musicians  competing for substantial  cash awards.

"The President's Own" United States Marine Band, in conjunction with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, is pleased to announce its annual concerto competition for high school musicians.  The winner will appear as a guest soloist with the U.S. Marine Band and receive a $2,500 cash prize from the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The runner up will receive a $500 cash prize.

The final round of the competition will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at John Philip Sousa Band Hall at the Marine Barracks Annex in southeast Washington, D.C. The final round is presented as a recital and is open to the public. The winner will perform in concert with the Marine Band at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 9, 2017 in the Washington, D.C. area.
