National Recovery Month
Did you know that September is National Recovery Month? Now you do. :)
National Recovery Month is a national observance held every September to educate Americans that treatment can enable those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a purposeful, happy and healthy life! Millions of Americans have made huge gains in their recovery and it should be celebrated, just as we celebrate those who manage other conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or asthma. I have been blessed to meet many in recovery, many of whom I consider my heroes. While struggles still remain, they fought the stigma and treatment barriers to get the appropriate help they needed to succeed. As a survivor of bulimia, I too have had to overcome struggles - but now I can use that lived experience to share my story of hope with others. This month, I challenge each of you to share your story of recovery OR learn from someone in recovery. Recover works, let your story be heard. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is launching　teachers.drugabuse.gov, a new online resource that offers teachers classroom activities and other year-round lessons on drugs and alcohol. This resource features an easy-to-use Lesson Plan and Activity Finder to search an array of scientist-created student lesson plans, multimedia classroom activities, and other teaching tools on how drug use affects the brain, body, and the lives of teens. Dollars Requested for DHS Loan Repayment Program
ARIZONA's DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES is requesting to have $350,000 allocated to their Loan Repayment Programs (SLRP) in the next state budget. The Arizona State Loan Repayment Programs consist of (SLRP) the Primary Care Provider Loan Repayment Program (PCPLRP ) and the Rural Private Primary Care Provider Loan Repayment Program (RPPCPLRP). These programs aim to promote the recruitment and retention of health care professionals by repaying their qualifying educational loans in exchange for their two-year commitment to provide primary care services in federally designated
Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) or
Arizona Medically Underserved Areas (AzMUA).

 AZ Senate Bill 1510 Vetoed Senate Bill 1510, a bill regarding the Dangerous and Incompetent, was vetoed by the Governor in May 2016. However, a study committee has been created to address the many issues addressed in this bill. A group of individuals well aware of these concerns have been assigned to this committee, we will keep folks posted as we have updates. Click here for a fact sheet on this bill.

The Subcommittee on Health Passes 5 Bipartisan Public Health Bills
The Subcommittee on Health, chaired by Rep. Joseph Pitts (R-PA), on 9/13/16 held a
markup
to consider five bipartisan bills to advance the public health. All five bills passed by voice vote and will now advance to the full committee. One of the bills,
AINS to H.R. 1877, Mental Health First Aid,
introduced by Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS), requires SAMHSA to award grants to initiate and sustain mental health awareness training grants. Individuals throughout a community would be eligible for inclusion in training such as first responders, law enforcement, or teachers. The goal of these programs is to train individuals to accomplish safe de-escalation of crisis situations, recognition of the signs and symptoms of mental illness, and encourage timely referral to mental health services.

Workforce Fingerprint Clearance Issues in Review Arizona Department of Health Services is looking to resolve some of the issues regarding the difficulty in hiring and maintaining an adequate workforce. They are proposing that an employee, volunteer or contractor who has applied for a good cause exception after being denied a fingerprint clearance card because their offense may be eligible for such an exception, may be supervised by an employee who has a valid fingerprint clearance card while the application for clearance is pending.
