Back-to-school Picnic
Le pique-nique de rentrée

Music workshop and Drum circle. Pictured: Layla, Finnegan, Winnie, Cyrus, Martin.

Many families, both new and returning, came to the Back-to-school Picnic on campus last Saturday. Under a beautiful, sunny sky, everyone enjoyed a nice international potluck and pizza. Children played games on the field, had their faces painted and joined a drum circle.
Treasure Hunt in Kindergarten
Chasse aux trésors en Grande Section

This photograph shows the discovery of the precious treasure.  From left to right: Flavio, Eloi, Raphaël, Charlotte, Farah, Freya, Isabella.

Some kindergarten students set out to search for a treasure at the school! They had to read a special map to find out where the treasure was hidden. To complete each step, they had to recognize words and read sentences studied previously in the classroom. Each time the students succeeded in reading, one picture was revealed. They did a great job and had fun!

A great experience that demonstrated how precious it is to read!

ÉDITO

In this edition of L'Écho, the second one of the school year, I tell you about on-campus events and share some information to help ensure you and your children get the most out of the SDFAS educational experience!

My name is Audrey Blanchard, and I'm in charge of publishing L'Écho, which you should receive twice monthly. I also design some of the school's posters. I have past experience as a Creative Director, and I like to paint when I can find the time... I have two very active children: Mark, who is in kindergarten, and Clara who is 16 months old.

I hope you like the new design of L'Écho. My goal was to make it more attractive and especially easier to read. The purpose of this newsletter is to give you a regular overview of all that the school offers our children in different areas and at different levels.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions or comments.

Enjoy reading L'Écho, and I wish you all an excellent school year!

Audrey Blanchard, Communications Officer

Chers parents,

Back-to-school Period
La rentrée des classes

Pictured: Mila meets her new teacher Julie Rousseau.

BTS period is almost over. Over the past two weeks, all teachers have been extremely attentive to nurture their new students in order to make this transition between home and school easier.
It is extremely important for us to make sure the children are emotionally happy at school.

Back-to-school is Fun!
La rentrée, c'est amusant !

As the first week in Middle School is already well under way, here are a few pictures of the first day...

Students enjoyed reconnecting with friends, exchanging summer vacation memories and meeting their new teachers!

Community Service in Preschool
Service civique en maternelle

Pictured: Eva, Gloria, Mia, Colton.

Gloria started community service last week in preschool. Every year, older students have the opportunity to give their time to the preschool. It's a great way for them to develop skills such as autonomy and a sense of responsibility, while connecting with our young students.

Last week, Gloria helped PK1 students place wooden beads on a long stick following a pattern, a difficult math problem for the 3 year-old!
Geography in the 4th Grade
La géographie en classe de CM1

Pictured:
Gabriel, Mofeng, Zakary, Capucine

As part of the Geography program, the 4th graders walked to the top of Mount Soledad in order to observe and make comments about the location of the school. Canyons, mountains, ocean, coast, residences... a long list of vocabulary was visually noted and understood.
New Musical Instruments in the Preschool
Les nouveaux instruments de musique en maternelle

Pictured: Noe, Clara, Jack

Children discovered new musical instruments installed in their playground:
A pagoda bell provides lush, long-lasting tones and is reminiscent of the architecture of Asia.
An 11-note resonated metallophone also makes deep tones of long duration and is very easy to play and enjoy.
Library News
Info Bibliothèque

Parent hour: The library will be open to parents on Thursdays from 8:30 to 9:30. You may check out one DVD and two books per child registered at the school.

Library hours for students:
Students from kindergarten to 5th grade come to the library once a week and check out books: one in kindergarten and 1st grade, two starting in 2nd grade. Those books are due the following week (except for larger books in higher grades). Please check your child's schedule for their library hour, and make sure they return their books on time. A good way to make sure library books are returned and don't get lost is to decide on a particular spot in the house where they are always placed after reading. Thank you for your help.

French books and magazines at home:
Through the library, you have access to a variety of French resources to help your child improve. You'll find a comparative table of all these offers on the school website (Parents' Pages / Library).

The deadline to subscribe to Ecole des loisirs (French books), and/or Milan or Bayard (French magazines) is September 29th. The Ecole des loisirs catalogs will be distributed soon.
Remember: getting a new book or magazine every month is very exciting for the children, and a great way for them to read more. You'll also help the school, since each subscription or book bought by parents allows the library to get new items all the students can enjoy.

Volunteers:
No specific help is needed in the library, but lots of help is needed to organize the two book fairs: French books in October and English books in the Spring. Please let me know if you are interested. It's a great way to help the school and you get first pick at the brand new exciting books on sale.

Happy Reading!
