Fleet Feet Shares Important Running Safety Tips Saturday morning a 25-year-old woman training for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon was attacked on Kenzie Street in Chicago. After being followed for a few blocks, a man choked and strangled her to the ground at 5:45 a.m. Luckily, a stranger was walking down the street and saved her.
Unfortunately, this woman is not the only victim recently; two more women were killed in New York and Massachusetts in early August, and women everywhere are beginning to afraid to go for a run alone.
As a result, Fleet Feet Sports Chicago has shared common safety tips to the running community in hopes that these attacks will be avoided. We highlighted a few below, but read the full list on Fleet Feet's website.
- Don't run alone
- Don't run the same route or at the same time of day
- Don't listen to music
- Run with a phone
- Tell someone your running plan
- Be visible in low-light conditions
- Run with your own water

50 State Finishers: The Popular Cross-Country Adventure for Runners
Across the United States, there are
dozens of great marathons with different themes, environments and courses. Like every state in the country, each 26.2-mile race has its own personality, providing a completely unique race experience from others. And while some people's bucket list consists of visiting every state, many chose to see the country from the perspective of a marathon start line.
Fifty state marathoners are actually more common than you may think; in fact, there's a whole club based in Houston called the 50 States Marathon Club, where runners can meet others with the same goal, and receive certification upon completion.
We spoke with a few 50 State Finishers themselves, both in and out of the club, for the
October edition of Chicago Athlete. Read the full feature
