CONVOCATION
The University Convocation was held on August 22nd in Weill Hall. We had record attendance this year! The speeches were very inspiring! We wish more of you had stayed around.

The Excellence in Teaching Awards were announced by Interim Provost Echeverria. They are Lauren Morimoto of Kinesiology and Lena McQuade of Women's and Gender Studies. Watch for a reception in their honor this year.

Academic Freedom
Academic freedom is the unrestricted search for knowledge and truth and its free exposition in the scholarly community. Faculty and students must be able, under the principles of academic freedom, to seek knowledge and truth and to express and defend their viewpoints in an atmosphere of mutual respect.  The Academic Freedom Subcommittee is charged with raising awareness and providing education so that the SSU learning community understands their rights regard academic freedom.  If you have any questions about academic freedom or if you feel like your rights regarding academic freedom have been violated please contact the AFS chair, Ajay Gehlawat, at [email protected].

What's Happened in Faculty Governance
After a two-year consultation and deliberation process, a major revision to the Reappointment, Tenure and Promotion policy was approved by the Senate and the President in the Spring.

The Faculty Standards and Affairs Committee (FSAC) began work on a faculty office hours policy. The Senate had a first look and referred it back to committee. Ask your School Reps to FSAC for updates.

The Senate heard excellent reports about the STARS program, Hispanic Serving Institution Status for SSU and the last Senate Budget Subcommittee report. SBS work is now part of APARC
