YIS Elul Update: New and Returning Educational Leaders
|
We are so blessed in our community to have a top-notch group of young and dynamic Educational leaders and teachers in our midst. And, as we head into the new year, we'd like to take this opportunity to welcome back some returning faces and personalities, as well as welcome in some new ones:
Rabbi Nuriel Klinger - Assistant Rabbi/Educational Director
In only one year since he began, Rabbi Klinger has already made a tremendous impact on our community in so many ways - in both his Rabbinic and Educational leadership capacities. He is a gifted orator, a talented teacher and a caring, sensitive soul. He, Aliza and their son, Yair, have been a perfect fit for our community. After receiving his B.A. from the University of Michigan, Rabbi Klinger went on to receive Semicha from RIETS at YU, while also earning an MA in Medieval Jewish History at the Revel Graduate School of YU. Last year, Rabbi Klinger taught Chumash to 8th graders at WDS, and, this year, he is teaching freshman Talmud at Ramaz. We look forward to another meaningful and inspiring year with him as our Assistant Rabbi and Educational Director.
Ora Weinbach -
Isidor & Rose Goldberg
Community Scholar
Ora Weinbach is returning to YIS as the Isidor & Rose Goldberg Community Scholar, a position dedicated by Carole Daman in memory of her dear parents. She teaches Limmudei Qodesh at the Abraham Joshua Heschel High School. Ora earned her degree in Jewish Education from Yeshiva University in the first graduating cohort of the Legacy Heritage Fellowship Program and has been honored to teach Jewish learners of almost every age. She has made a tremendous impact in our community with her dynamic teaching and engaging personality. The community can look forward to having Ora join us once a month for Shabbat and she will deliver a number of evening lectures throughout the year.
Please check out this recent news story involving our very own Ora Weinbach,
Orly Klapholz - Youth Director
Orly is returning for her second year as our Youth Director. Her creativity, organization and enthusiasm have allowed our youth department to thrive over the past year. During her one year here we have seen the formation, growth and success of Tween Minyan. We had tremendous success engaging children of all ages in unique programs such as Sukkot Cake Wars, Pre-Purim Life-size Candyland and Color War on the evening of the Shul's progressive dinner. Orly spent the summer planning for this coming year and has worked diligently to prepare our incredible youth leaders for what promises to be another fantastic year of youth programming. During the week Orly teaches 9th and 10th grade English at ELLIS, a public High School in the Bronx. Orly can be reached via email at [email protected].
Sam and Joella Apple - Teen Educators
Joella and Sam Apple, both graduates of Westchester Day School, are originally from Riverdale and Scarsdale, respectively. Joella has a BA in Psychology from Binghamton University, and is working for her second consecutive year as an assistant teacher at The Windward School in Manhattan as she begins to apply to Master's programs in School Psychology. Sam, on the other hand, recently graduated from Yeshiva University with a BA in Biology and is currently serving as a Joel Daner Yachad Communal Fellow before matriculating at Downstate College of Medicine for Fall 2017. Both Joella and Sam are extremely excited to work with the YIS teens and contribute to the already vibrant teen program this coming year. Lastly, they can be reached via email at [email protected] for any comments, questions, concerns or compliments.
Shiffy Friedman - Westchester County Yoetzet Halacha
Shiffy Friedman is the new Westchester County Yoetzet Halacha. Once again this year, we are happy to partner with the Hebrew Institute of White Plains in making this initiative possible. Shiffy studied at the Stella K. Abraham Beit Midrash for women in Migdal Oz after graduating from Ma'ayanot Yeshiva High School in Teaneck, NJ. She then went on to earn a BA at Yeshiva University in Judaic studies and a dual masters in Education and Jewish studies from New York University. She has been teaching Judaic studies at SAR Academy for six years.
Shiffy studied in Nishmat's Miriam Glaubach Center's U.S. Yoatzot Halacha Fellows Program and was certified as a Yoetzet Halacha, advisor on the laws of taharat ha-mishpacha (Jewish family life) as part of the second graduating class in the United States. Her training also encompasses areas of biology, psychology and sexuality. Since her graduation, she has taught brides in preparation for their weddings and she counsels women through questions relating to interface of women's health and halacha.
Along with her husband, Rabbi Noam Friedman, Shiffy serves as an educator for the Orthodox Union's Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus (OU-JLIC) at Columbia/Barnard Hillel. Shiffy and Rabbi Noam, along with their children, Avital and Adir, live near the Columbia and Barnard campuses in Manhattan's Morningside Heights.
You can contact Shiffy with questions related to Jewish family life or for kallah classes for perspective brides by email at
