IAIA's Alumni Program will host the 7th annual Holiday Art Market from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 7 in the Library and Technology Center. More than three-dozen students, faculty, staff, alumni and other Native American artists will sell artwork, beaded items, jewelry, paintings, pottery, prints and more.
The event coincides with a Holiday Art Market hosted by the nearby Santa Fe Community College.

IAIA alumni win American Book Awards Two graduates and one faculty member of IAIA's Creative Writing Department have received American Book Awards, adding to the long list of prestigious achievements by Creative Writing alumni and faculty.
Joy Harjo (Mvskoke/Creek), dg nanouk okpik (Inupiat/Inuit) and Natalie Diaz (Akimel O'Odham) received the award recognizing outstanding achievement from diverse writers. Harjo, who graduated from IAIA in 1968, was honored for her most recent book, Crazy Brave, A Memoir (W.W. Norton & Company). This was the second American Book Award for Harjo, who was honored with her book of poetry, In Mad Love and War (Wesleyan University Press), in 1991. okpik, a 2005 IAIA graduate, was honored for her first book of poetry, Corpse Whale (University of Arizona Press). New IAIA M.F.A. Creative Writing faculty member Natalie Diaz also received the award for her first book of poetry, When My Brother Was an Aztec (Copper Canyon Press), published last year.
The Before Columbus Foundation created the award to honor excellence in contemporary, multicultural American literature. Read more.

prose & poetry at IAIA's 2nd Writers Festival
Start the new year with laughter and tears at the second IAIA Writers Festival featuring graduate students and award-winning visiting faculty January 4 -10, 2014. Authors include Ramona Ausubel, Sherman Alexie, Natalie Diaz, Jon Davis, Melissa Febos, Santee Frazier, Joan Kane, Linda Hogan and Chris Merrill.
The Writers Festival is part of IAIA's new low residency MFA Creative Writing program - visiting faculty are introduced to graduate students when they are in residence in Santa Fe and mentor students throughout their coursework. IAIA's graduate program is unique - it's the only one in the country that focuses on Native American literature and authors.

IAIA's Public Art Committee invites all alumni to submit artwork for an exhibition in the entrance gallery of the new Welcome Center scheduled to open in March 2014.
The exhibition, Salutations: 1st IAIA Public Art Biennial, is in celebration of the grand opening of the Welcome Center, and will exhibit the breadth and depth of artwork by alumni of the Institute.

U.S. Canadian Consulate features IAIA
Six IAIA students will be part of a U.S.-Canadian calendar showing that the relationship between Indigenous people across North America isn't all that different. The work of Heidi Brandow, Rondee Graham, Monty Little, Melissa Shaginoff, Adrian Wall and Laura Walkingstick will appear in the 2014 U.S. Consulate calendar to be published by the consulate and distributed to its Canadian offices.
Bonnie Devine, an instructor and founding chair of the Indigenous Visual Culture Program at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD University) in Toronto, said when the consulate contacted OCADU and wanted to locate images and develop the theme, We are all related, she remembered her time in Santa Fe as an artist showing at the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts and visiting IAIA.
"IAIA is also well known in Canada and well known for the pioneering work that it's done in delivering studio-based curriculum for Indigenous people," she said.
Twelve pieces of work from IAIA and OCAD students were chosen based on themes of how Indigenous people are related, such as by border, land or similar topics. Each of the students will also have their photos published on the back of the calendar.
The IAIA students chosen and a faculty member will travel to Toronto early next year when the calendar is unveiled.

IAIA Foundation Board welcomes new member
The IAIA Foundation welcomes its newest board member Sheryl Kelsey, Ph.D., who is Professor Emerita of the Department of Epidemiology at the Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh. After many years of part-time residency, she and her husband, George Duncan, recently settled full-time in Santa Fe.
The IAIA Foundation, which was incorporated in 2010 as a separate organization, has two primary goals: to help increase private gifts for IAIA and help provide greater stewardship and cultivation of our generous donors. Since the start of the Foundation, the IAIA fundraising program has grown significantly - with donations to support scholarships, programs, and school operations increasing by almost 30 percent. This success is due in large part to the IAIA Foundation, which has been particularly active in the last year.
The foundation is guided by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors. The co-chairs are Tony Abeyta and Mark Bahti, and in addition to Sheryl Kelsey, the other directors include: Charmay Allred, Dorothy Bracey, Melissa Coleman, Robert Harcourt, Charles McKittrick, Michael Namingha, and George Rivera. Alex Shapiro, director of IAIA's Office of Institutional Advancement, also serves as the foundation's executive director.
The board members' hard work and advocacy on behalf of IAIA have made a vital contribution to the fundraising efforts at IAIA. Since October 2012, the IAIA Foundation has processed more than $1.2 million in donations. The IAIA students, faculty, and staff are deeply grateful to the IAIA Foundation and its volunteers for all their efforts to support IAIA.

- Congratulations to IAIA students Julia Edmonds and Laura Walkingstick, who will be inaugurated in SITE Santa Fe Scholar Program. Scholars receive SITE membership and free access to SITE's programs, as well as membership in the North American Reciprocal Museum Program and the Modern/Contemporary Membership program, both of which offer complimentary admission to most art museums nationwide.
- In an effort to promote newsletter readership and build IAIA's social media following, the Marketing and Communications (MarComm) Department will have a gift card give-away. The contest is open to any IAIA staff member, faculty or student. For this issue, the first four people who can tell the MarComm Department what the sixth article in the newsletter was, and what was posted on IAIA's Facebook page on Friday, December 6 will receive a $10 Subway, Starbucks or iTunes gift card. To claim a prize, come by the MarComm office across from the Dean of Student's office in the CLE between noon and 1 p.m. on Monday, December 9.
