SDYS Transitional Youth Program Needs Assistance
|

San Diego Youth Services' Transitional Youth Program needs immediate assistance in re-arranging their storage garage and delivering some furniture to apartments.
This can be scheduled at the convenience of the volunteer and his company! It would take at least two people and a truck/van to make delivers of furniture and can be done any day of the week. This would be a great team building project for larger companies! This is even a great project to get your teenagers involved in helping! If you can help please contact - Vicky Cate at

Energy storage is an emerging technology that can be easily integrated into facility energy systems to cut energy bills, boost resiliency and catalyze sustainability goals. There are already hundreds of grid-connected energy storage systems installed at commercial facilities throughout the world, primarily thermal systems and batteries. But what exactly is energy storage, and how can facilities tap into its benefits? In this webinar, Randy Fish, Advisor to the
California Energy Storage Alliance
, will provide an overview of energy storage, including the most common technologies, the range of applications and benefits, and options for financing storage systems. This presentation will be followed by a case study from a local facility that has already installed and deployed an energy storage system.

IFMA's World Workplace 5k Run

 Whether or not you're planning to attend World Workplace, there is an opportunity to participate in a 5K Fun Run Walk on Wednesday, October 5
th at 7:30 a.m., starting along the San Diego waterfront boardwalk. The intent is to help raise money to support the work of the IFMA Foundation, that provides scholarships, research grants and assists in developing accredited FM programs. The cost to participate is $50 if you register in advance ($60 on-site). Register alone or put together a team of coworkers and friends!

You're on a new electric rate
Are y
o
u ready for event days? All businesses are now on a time-of-use pricing plan which means your price for electricity changes based on the time
of day. Most customers are on a Time-of-Use Plus rate which provides lower prices in exchange for your commitment to reduce electricity during Reduce Your Use days - typically hot summer days. This means that from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (on any day including weekends), you'll need to reduce your energy use. Otherwise, your electricity prices can increase up to 400%. Conservation Alerts
 Though the overall summer outlook calls for adequate electricity supplies, the transmission system could get congested on hotter than normal days when air conditioning use goes up significantly. In response, calls for energy conservation may go out. There are several types of energy conservation alerts. These include;
-
Demand Response events like
Reduce Your Use days and
Critical Peak Pricing call for reducing or shifting electricity use during peak periods. Notification for these events happens through My Account and is also posted on SDG&E's website. If you aren't signed up to receive event notifications, log on to sdge.com/MyAccount and click on alerts and subscriptions to follow the prompts for enrolling.
- Flex Alerts are issued by the California Independent System Operator (ISO). The ISO manages the flow of electricity across the high-voltage, long distance power lines that make up 80 percent of California's and a small part of Nevada's power grid. Flex Alerts can be triggered by heat waves, when electricity demand exceeds supply. Flex Alerts are posted on the ISO website, sent by emails and texts to people who sign up for notifications, and are posted to Twitter and other social media outlets. The ISO notifies the media when a Flex Alert is issued.
Energy-saving tips for your office
- Turning off machines when they are not in use can result in energy savings. There is a common misconception that screen savers reduce energy use by monitors; they do not. Automatic switching to sleep mode or manually turning monitors off is always the better energy-saving strategy.
- To maximize savings with a laptop, put the AC adapter on a power strip that can be turned off (or will turn off automatically); the transformer in the AC adapter draws power continuously, even when the laptop is not plugged into the adapter.
- Common misconceptions sometimes account for the failure to turn off equipment. Many people believe that equipment lasts longer if it is never turned off. This incorrect perception carries over from the days of older mainframe computers.
- Consider buying a laptop for your next computer upgrade; they use much less enegy than desktop computers, resulting in long-term savings.
- Unplug battery chargers when the batteries are fully charged or the chargers are not in use.
- Get alerts from SDG&E. Use MyAccount to set up billing and energy use alers by voicemail, email or text.
- View videos featuring local small-business energy-saving success stories.
