Dear Lakeside Community,
The 2015-16 school year marked the second year of California's new student statewide assessment system - California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (
CAASPP). It replaced the previous Standardized Testing and Reporting System (STAR).
CAASPP is very different than the old STAR tests in several ways. CAASPP tests are:
- aligned with California's updated content standards for Language Arts and Mathematics
- reflect the critical thinking and problem solving skills that students need to be ready for the 21st century job market and college environment
- taken on the computer and are adaptive, which means that during the test, the questions become more or less difficult based on how the student in responding
- able to provide better support for English Learners and students with disabilities
Four levels of performance are noted:
-
Standard Exceeded - exceeded the achievement standard and demonstrated advanced progress towards mastery of knowledge and skills
-
Standard Met - met
the achievement standard and demonstrated progress towards mastery of knowledge and skills
-
Standard Nearly Met - nearly met
the achievement standard and may require further development to demonstrate progress towards mastery of knowledge and skills
-
Standard Not Met - not met the
achievement standard and needs substantial improvement to demonstrate progress of knowledge and skills
The charts below show how Lakeside students compare to students in both Santa Clara County and in California. Because of the very small numbers of our students, under 20 in all grade levels, data analysis is not valid to compare year to year. However, our state test scores notably exceed those in Santa Clara County and the rest of the state.
The test reports also show how students performed in key content claims, also called areas, in Language Arts and Mathematics.
Language Arts claims include: reading, writing, listening, research/inquiry
Math claims include: problem solving and modeling/data analysis, concepts & procedures, and communication reasoning

Our educators and paraprofessionals deserve a great deal of thanks for the hard work every day to support our students. The scores are evidence of quality teaching practices coupled with outstanding effort by our students. With that said, our goal is always one of
continuous improvement. As a result, we will continue to hone our instructional practices, include monthly time (in short periods) to allow students to become more familiar with the assessment approaches, and a strong K-5 focus on literacy. As the year unfolds, we will continue to share examples of what we are doing to ensure students are mastering the Common Core State Standards. But for now, a bit of time to celebrate our accomplishments and move into next steps.
Warmly,
Dr. Lisa Gonzales
