September 15, 2016
Dear Members and Fellow Pain Warriors,

Over the past two weeks, the U.S. Pain Foundation has been honored to show the pride and strength of pain warriors and their families during Pain Awareness Month.

W e are continuing to encourage pain warriors to participate in any way they can this month, whether you sign the Pain Awareness Month pledge or join our 30-day Challenge of Empowerment, the courage and unity seen throughout the pain community is inspiring.

We are also encouraging individuals to contact their local and state representatives through our People With Pain Matter campaign. The more people contacting their representatives, the more likely it is that pain patients will get the recognition and care they deserve! You can find out more below.

We are proud of each and every one of you for your ability and bravery day in and day out. U.S. Pain will continue fighting along side of you throughout your journey, and continue advocating for your rights.

Wishing you all a low-pain and high-spirits day,
Paul Gileno

Side Effect of Drug Fight Means Some Are Left to Suffer

Emily Lemiska was in trouble.
She was out of medication and she was out of state.
She was also in chronic pain, caused by a rare spine disorder, Klippel-Feil, in which two or more bones of the spinal column fuse together. In Lemiska's case, it was eight.
To treat the searing pain caused by that disorder, the former runner and fitness enthusiast relied on Tramadol, a synthetic opioid.
In 2014, while visiting her husband outside Boston where he was in a legal internship, the then-Berlin resident ran out of medication and called her doctor's office for a refill.
But the pain doctor treating her would not refill her prescription. To obtain a refill for such an opioid, patients must visit the doctor personally.
"I can't drive," said Lemiska, now 30. "I would have to get my mother or my husband to drive me. So I asked them, 'Can I come in next week and get a temporary prescription to hold me over?'"
No, she could not. And when Lemiska's pain increased, she began to cry. And to panic. And to call any medical personnel she could find who would prescribe enough Tramadol to keep her pain at bay for a few days until she returned to Connecticut to see her doctor. Continue Reading Here...

Canton Woman Is A  Pain Warrior

The following article was recently written by Joanne Maliszewski of Hometownlife. It features Michigan Pain Ambassador Suzanne Stewart, who has been instrumental in raising awareness in her community this month.

Suzanne Stewart of Canton lives in pain - all of the time. And she knows plenty of others who share a similar lifestyle.

"It's up there with cancer, childbirth and amputation of a finger without anesthesia," said Stewart who suffers from an autoimmune disease and other issues.

As an ambassador for the U.S. Pain Foundation, Stewart  - who attended an educational retreat in August - has a host of events and displays this month in Canton to spread awareness of living in chronic pain. The U.S. Pain Foundation serves as advocates for pain management through a variety of methods, including medicines.

Stewart's life of pain began following an auto accident in 2002, which led to eight surgeries.  Continue Reading Here
