A Message from the Principal
9/12/16

Dear Friends,

As I resume the role of Principal at KCHS, I am happy to report that enrollment is up! Today there are 310 students in the building. We have been very busy reaching out to families who inquired about enrollment but never followed through because of finances. Needless to say, we are pleased with the outcome.  The enrollment by Class is as follows:

Freshmen: 78
Sophomores: 82
Juniors: 75
Seniors: 75
TOTAL: 310

Despite the perceived obstacle of transitioning to public transportation from school buses, our youngsters have proven to be resilient and resourceful. More families are dropping students off in the morning and/or car-pooling but allowing students to take public transportation at the end of the school day. Our adjusted hours have facilitated the process; 8:15 AM - 2:15 PM.

Onward and Upward!

Faithfully,
Jo-Anne Jakab

New at Kolbe: PlusPortals
KCHS is introducing a new platform to communicate with our families called Plus Portals, by Rediker. We will no longer be using Edline.

Plus Portals is a cloud-based application integrated with the KCHS student information system. This application provides access to student class pages where you will be able to see your students' grades, progress reports, schedules, attendance and discipline records along with teacher contact information.

It also makes available school-wide information such as event dates, school announcements, and resources (forms, handbooks, etc). Please look for the activation email and click on the link to set up your Plus Portals account.

Class of 2020 Bible Blessing
On their second day of classes, members of the Class of 2020 gathered in the Cathedral to begin their faith journey at KCHS.  Mrs. Jakab spoke to the group about the education they will receive at KCHS being aimed at more than just their minds, but their hearts and souls as well.  "Our goal is to prepare you for Harvard and Heaven!" she told the group.  Father Augustine blessed the bibles that were presented and students prayed together, asking for God's Grace as they begin their new school year.

World Youth Day 2016
This past summer, Spiritual Director Fr. Augustine and Kolbe students Benedicte Kabongo ('17), Travis Sanders ('17), Maria Marin ('16), Le'Asia Gaskin ('17), Larry Alfaro ('17), Rene Alfaro ('18), Kevin Suscal ('19), Karla Nunez ('16) attended World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland!

WYD is a worldwide encounter with the Pope which is typically celebrated every three years in a different country. The most recent WYD was celebrated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from July 23rd to 28th, 2013 and this past World Youth Day was held in Krakow, Poland.

WYD is open to all young people who want to take part in a festive encounter with their contemporaries centered on Jesus Christ. This event is an opportunity to experience in first person the universality of the Church; to share with the whole world the hope of many young people who want to commit themselves to Christ and others. World Youth Day is a unique way to deepen your faith and grow closer to Christ, by means of prayer and the sacraments, together with thousands of other young people who share your interests and ambitions.

In speaking with both Travis Sanders and Le'Asia Gaskin, both commented on how awesome it was to be with thousands of young people celebrating Mass together, praying together and realizing we are linked through our worship. Both said the most moving moment was when they visited the cell in which St. Maximilian Kolbe was held and executed, feeling both a sense of the evil that had been there and the grace brought to Kolbe through God. There were hundreds of teens at the site and there was silence from the emotions felt.
