Nation's #1 Dining App Launches In Blacksburg

Free mobile dining app, Spotluck, has partnered with 10 local restaurants here in downtown Blacksburg. Spotluck operates on a simple concept: local restaurants thrive when collaborating as a neighborhood. The community of restaurants offers "smart" discounts to attract customers during slower times (between 10%-35%). With a quick and simple spin, the app selects one restaurant to give a higher discount for that day and that day only. Want to try somewhere else instead? You'll still get 10% off any of the other restaurants just for being a Spotlucker.

Download the free app using promo code "DOWNTOWN" and stop by to support these tasty local restaurants:
Blacksburg Taphouse
Zeppoli's
Wicked Taco

Duane Paxson
Southeastern College Art Conference 2015 Fellowship Recipient
Duane Paxson's sculpture exhibit titled Malelingue, literally "bad tongues," in Italian, or "accusers," is a symbolic representation of the Salem witch trials that during the 17th century sent women of doubtful guilt to their deaths. Highly abstracted, these accusers are standing works struggling with LaStrega, the "witches," as though pulling them apart, similar to medieval torture. "Accusation," the artist contends "is very difficult to escape. No matter how you try to exonerate yourself it is almost impossible to prove your innocence."
Duane states, "I grew up in Troy, Alabama, whose rural atmosphere has given me an abiding appreciation for the mysteries and rhythms of nature. To this propensity for the outside world, I include an equally expansive knowledge of tradition and symbolism..."

Duane is faculty at Troy University in Troy, Alabama where he teaches visual art and sculpture. He received his M.F.A. at the University of Alabama and works from his studio in Comer, Georgia.

Also on exhibit in the gallery display cases are the ceramic sculptures of Eric Cowan

Are YOU interested in making your business more inclusive?

VTCAR is looking for Business Owners & Hiring Personnel to assist with a research study on inclusivity in the workplace!

WHY?   The Virginia Tech Center for Autism Research (VTCAR) wants to learn about the needs, goals, and barriers towards employment of young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In the long term, we aim to develop an employment training program that helps improve employment opportunities for young adults with ASD.

WHO?   You are eligible if you are a business owner or employee responsible for making hiring decisions for your business.

WHAT? We invite employers from companies of all sizes to participate in 1 hour focus groups to discuss employment issues related to individuals with ASD. Participants will hear a short presentation about ASD and then discuss potential barriers and benefits concerning employing individuals with ASD. If employers would like to help with this project, but are unable to attend a focus group, an individual interview either in person or over the phone can be scheduled.

WHERE? We can conduct our interviews on the Virginia Tech Campus, at a location of your choosing, or via Skype or phone call, at a time scheduled for your convenience
