A Message from the Superintendent

Dear Lovejoy Community:

Some of you may have noticed the flags in front of Lovejoy High School this week.  This is the work of LHS students, Dayton Thompson, Brandon Merrill, Andrew Grissom, and the LHS Student Council.  This group of students, along with parents, spent most of Sunday, September 11, placing 2,977 American flags in front of the high school in honor of the individuals who lost their lives in the September 11 attacks.

Friday will mark the end of the community effort "Spreading Lovejoy" across state lines.  This effort is in response to the 2016 Louisiana floods.  Learn how you may help:

Congratulations to the Lovejoy High School Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Joey Sloan, on their selection as a National Winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Orchestra Honors Project.  This recognition is awarded by The Foundation for Music Education.

There was a great article in The Red Ledger (LHS's award winning online newspaper) this week regarding Nick Victor (LHS/Class of 2011).  Nick recently reached an agreement to play for Gimle BBK of the Norwegian BLNO league.  Click here to read the full article which includes highlights of Nick's time at Yale University.

Sarah Krolnik (LHS/Sophomore) recently received a letter from AAU diving.  She will be in the 2016 addition of Outstanding Athletes of AUU for diving.  Congratulations, Sarah.

A Message from the
Deputy Superintendent

Dear Lovejoy Community:

We are now in our 4th week of school.  I hope the school experience for each student continues to be excellent.  In addition to sharing information about student performance, this portion of Email Express is an opportunity to discuss major elements of our academic program, and to communicate changes within our academic program.

One recent change includes modifications to "field trips" for our K-4 students.

Last spring, each elementary campus sent a representative to serve on a committee to identify common field-based learning experiences for grades K-4.  We currently provide common field experiences in fifth grade (Collin County Adventure Camp) and sixth grade (Perot Museum).

In order to ensure alignment of students' experiences, regardless of the elementary school they attend, we have developed field-based learning experiences for grades K-4.  Each decision was based on a review of the grade level standards, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the age appropriateness of the location, and the activities which may be completed prior to and after each event.

For the 2016-17 school year, the common field-based learning experiences are:

Grade
2016-2017 Field-Based Learning Experience
K
Arboretum
1
Dallas Heritage Museum
2
Dallas Museum of Art
3
Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center
4
State Capital

The most significant change is for third grade students.  They will experience symphony music at the Meyerson.  They will no longer go to the State Fair.  The committee determined this change was needed based on the changes which have occurred with the third grade science standards.  Additionally, the committee felt a broader range of learning connections can be made by a common experience at the Meyerson.

As always, each campus will base its scheduling on available dates and most appropriate times of the school year.  If you have any questions about the field-based learning experiences for your elementary student, please feel free to contact your child's teacher or the campus administrators.

We hope you love where you have chosen for your child to learn.  If you have feedback to help us improve, please do not hesitate to contact me on my cell at 214.385.1967.

Respectfully,
Dennis Muizers

Volunteer Opportunity:
Senior Project Judge

The Senior Project is an exciting part of every Lovejoy High School senior's experience as they explore topics of their choice and share what they learn with members of the community. There are different components of the project including creating a proposal, writing an annotated bibliography, and completing an activity. As the culminating event of their Senior Project, students give an 8 to 10-minute presentation about their experience to a panel of adult volunteer judges. These judges score students on their presentation skills, and give them feedback designed to help them in their future pursuits.

You are invited to share in this experience as a Senior Project Judge. Presentations will take place this year at Lovejoy High School on November 15th, December 7th, January 17th, and February 16th. Presentations will begin at 5:30 PM and should conclude by 9:00 PM. Dinner will be provided each evening.

There are only four opportunities to serve as a Senior Project judge this year. As a result, additional judges will be needed each evening.

If you would like to register to serve as a Senior Project judge, please click here.   For additional information, please contact: [email protected] or [email protected] .
