Rose Garden Progress
Thanks to our Vice Chair Elizabeth Butson's seed money, our Rose Garden is well on its way to being renewed from the ground up.
Trenches have been dug for an irrigation system specifically designed for the needs of our roses. The electricity is in place for our new fountain. More funds need to be secured to see this project through. Our goal is to have roses blooming in mid-June.

To Friends and Fans
of Jefferson Market Garden!

The Polar Vortex and early-and-often icy snow storms followed by extreme cold created havoc in our Garden. The ground heaved and plant roots were pushed up to meet the freezing temperatures. The newly planted shrubs and trees were not ready for this torture and even older plants failed to survive. All the 6-foot Hollies along the back fence, four Skimmia Japonica, four Hinoki Cypress, seven Rhododendrons and, despite the name, four Siberian Cypress needed to be replaced. Unanticipated expenses all!
As Horticulturist/Garden Designer Susan Sipos
directed the volunteers and garden crew in preparing the garden for the season, we saw dead leaves hanging on our shrubs and brown, twisted leaves on the few tulips that broke though the ground early. We realized that our always memorable tulip display will be later this year than last.

At the same time, the Magnolias have begun to bloom. There are signs of Spring everywhere. The reliable hardy Hellebore are blooming near the corner of 10th Street and Greenwich Avenue. You can see the daffodils swaying in the wind when you pass by on 6th Avenue. From 10th Street you can see an Andromeda in full bloom.
 
The "dead" stalks of Hydrangeas are sprouting whorls of bright green leaves; the tree peonies are unfolding reddish leaves, and red sprouts on the ground will provide new stalks for our perennial peonies. On the thorny stalks of the climbing roses, red buds are morphing into shiny green leaves. And the remaining Rhododendron, Camellias, Azaleas display strong buds... awaiting a few more days of sunshine and some April showers.

Garden Volunteers
 
We send our sincere thanks to the hearty Garden Volunteers who came out on unseasonably cold Mondays this Spring to clean up the Garden! During each workday, they toted out scores of bags full of debris.
Volunteers are essential to the operation of our Garden. Every Monday when the Garden is closed to the community, a group of Volunteer Gardeners coordinated by Diane Darrow, under the professional guidance of Horticulturist/ Garden Designer Susan Sipos, are working magic in the Garden. Tuesday through Sunday throughout our season, weather permitting, Gate Volunteers coordinated by Kacie Carl, welcome visitors.
